Payne sets mission for Ohio State camp

With a chest full of offers, defensive back Dâ€™Andre Payne is planning to attend a one-day camp at Ohio State next week and prove to the Buckeyes that their assessment of him was dead on.

At 5-foot-9 and 169 pounds, Payne isnâ€™t a towering cover corner, but the attributes the 2014 recruit out of Washington D.C. brings are exactly what Division I coaches are seeking.

â€œI have good technique,â€ Payne said. â€œI have great hips, and Iâ€™m fast. A lot of people say Iâ€™m kind of a small corner, but it doesnâ€™t phase me. Iâ€™ll check anybody. I have heart and I play big.â€

Speaking of big, when Ohio State offered Payne earlier this year, it gave the defensive back a kick start to his junior year with Howard D. Woodson High in the fall.

Schools like Arkansas, Auburn, Michigan, Penn State, Miami, Illinois, Georgia and Virginia Tech are among the more than 25 offers Payne has, but the Buckeyesâ€™ interest ranks high.

â€œIt was a big offer,â€ Payne said. â€œItâ€™s a great academic school, a great coaching staff and just a great atmosphere.

â€œI donâ€™t have a top five or top 10 or anything, but itâ€™s one of those schools that Iâ€™m highly interested in. Coach (Urban) Meyer has been a great coach at Utah and Florida, and I know heâ€™s going to pick Ohio State back up.â€

As for what Payne plans on doing in Columbus next week, thatâ€™s easy. Heâ€™s there to show his four interceptions -- two for touchdowns -- werenâ€™t a fluke last season.

In short, itâ€™s just more of the same for an all-around athlete that excelled on special teams and at wide receiver as well last fall.

â€œI do my thing pretty much any time Iâ€ out there,â€ Payne said. â€œIâ€™m pretty sure they know what I can do.â€

Most times, the best critique in football comes from someone who plays the game.

ESPN Watch List junior D’Andre Payne (Washington, D.C./Woodson) took an unofficial visit to Penn State and saw Ohio State beat the Nittany Lions 35-23. A group that has come under fire recently, the Buckeyes’ secondary played well in the eyes of the 5-foot-9, 169-pound cornerback.

While Ohio State did give up 327 yards to quarterback Matt McGloin, for the most part it kept Penn State in check, giving up two touchdowns through the air, with one coming in the last two minutes of the game.

“I think they did really well last night,” Payne said. “That secondary did great. The defense played well the entire game.”

The one playmaker Payne was impressed with was cornerback Bradley Roby, who had 5 tackles and 4 pass breakups in the win.

“Bradley Roby, he made a whole lot of plays, key plays, last night,” Payne said. “They tried to go up top on him and he was there. They tried to do a couple short routes on him, too, and he was there.”

While the defense played a big role in Payne’s eyes, so did the offense, as the capital city recruit walked away feeling good about Ohio State and the team’s future.

“The offense struggled, but the defense was there in the first half,” Payne said. “That offense came back and made the adjustments.

“Braxton Miller was just killing Penn State. I kind of expected them to be how they were in the first half, but after that they really got the ball rolling and started getting better and better. They started playing Ohio State football.”

Payne has more than 30 Division I offers as his team enters the playoffs, with five of those offers coming from Big Ten programs.

The recruitment of D'Andre Payne (Washington, D.C./Woodson) has been at full-go for a while now.

A 5-foot-9, 169-pound cornerback with blazing speed, the ESPN Watch List junior has more than 30 Division I scholarship offers and expects that number to go through the roof as the recruiting process heats up in the offseason.

After an 0-4 start, Payne had the Warriors headed in the right direction with five consecuitve victories before Woodson lost its finale to finish at 5-5.

Offensively, he had 26 catches for 498 yards with nine touchdowns, but that's not where he's making his name. As a defensive back, Woodson rallied around its star as the Warriors allowed just 26 points in the three games before the Week 10 loss.

BuckeyeNation caught up with Payne to see where things stand and to get his thoughts on what the next step might be for the defensive back who has virtually every school after him.

BN: You have more than 30 Division I offers right now. How do you keep all that in perspective and keep the craziness of it all in check?

Payne: You just have to take it one day at a time. It's a lot, but you have to relax a little and keep moving forward. You have to be ready at all times.

I don't have a Facebook account or Twitter, so that helps. That leads to a lot of distractions. The mail comes. Coaches call and I call coaches. It's hard sometimes, but you just have to get through it.

BN: Ohio State was early in the process with an offer. What did it mean to you to get it, and has it lost its luster with all these offers coming in now?

Payne: They were my fifth offer. It meant a lot because Zach Smith is the one recruiting me. I knew Coach Smith when he was at Temple. Now he has gone to Ohio State and hooked back up with Urban Meyer after they were together at Florida. He helps the situation out. They said they really like me.

BN: When the season ends where does the recruiting go?

Payne: I think more schools are going to start coming at me. I just have to be ready for whatever.

BN: Do you have a timetable for when you think maybe a commit or top five will come?

Payne: I might throw out a top eight or something like that after the season, but for right now I'm not thinking about committing to anybody. I have a lot of time. A lot of new schools may come in. Anything can happen right now. I'm just taking it easy.

BN: What does Ohio State mean to you?

Payne: I love their tradition. I love the atmosphere and the coaching staff. It's been a great team for a while. The possibility to play for Urban Meyer is exciting. I could see myself playing for them.
