That was a big issue early last year too.

I'm going to give Fickell and Withers the benefit of the doubt and say that the cushion was because of Roby and Barnette being out. I hope to see a more aggressive defense next week.

I know it's only 1 game (and I don't want to sound like the sky is falling) but if you look at past champions (or really great teams for that matter) you'll see something in common. Each team has strong LB and DL play and their oline can hold their own in pass protection and run blocking.

I am still concerned about our LB's as this is still a glaring weakness on this team despite recent recruiting, and yes I know several are still freshman. I feel our dline will mature due to depth but I haven't seen or heard much positive play from our LB's in the past couple seasons.

Again, it's still very early in the season but we need our LB's to step up (quicker than other positions) if we want to be legitimately considered an elite team this year.

well now that i got a nice night of sleep and had time to digest yesterday's performance here's my takes on the game.

-1st linsley is very important to this offensive line. you could tell as soon as he was pulled things went down hill for the offense.

-it was very obvious the first quarter was scripted and we looked damn good up to that point.

-the 2 point conversions was brilliant!! i watched the game with 10 other people and they could not understand it. the next 11 teams we play in the regular season will now have to take time out of their week of practice and prepare for that formation. there's so many different things you can do out of the muddle huddle formation. A+ on that play call!

-one thing no one has touched on was the special teams. the coverage was a lot better compared to the last 2 seasons. big improvement there. the running into the kicker was tough to swallow but at the time it was a very good call to go after them.

-braxton looked like a better passer. over the game he was 15 for 22 and threw for 2 TD's. not a bad start! the interception was ugly but overall still happy with his performance.

-every where i have read everyone is asking where spence was all day. the guy posted 6 tackles and 2 tfl. he did that against a quick passing attack! not a bad day for that guy. washington was the guy that was missing. only 2 tackles yesterday.

-now i come to grant. i have said that i am still not sold on this guy. early in the game he didn't look too bad. but once shazier went out his weakness was exposed. someone in the LB corps has to step up other than shazier. i feel perry at this point would be the better option than grant.

those are just a few quick hits from yesterday. i think this team still has a lot of improvement and growth to do. i still feel from this starting point to the end of the season we will improve and get better. i think warriner will need to spend more time with decker and he will get better. remember last year our offensive line was not all that great in the first 5 games. i will also say defensively we will get better just by adding barnett and roby back in the lineup. i think it's safe to say that when hyde and smith come back the running game will be even more dangerous. hall is not a in between tackle RB. there were times last year hyde made our offensive line look really good when he was breaking 1 or 2 tackles for an 8 yard gain.

it's funny before the game i told one of my buddies that i wouldn't be surprised that we wouldn't score 50 on the bulls. just with it being the first game and there was still going to be some wrinkles to work out. just a heads up for next week. SDST will move the ball on us. they will spread us out and throw those annoying short passes. they scare me more than cal. this game could turn into a shoot out if we blow coverages and don't tackle well in space. i still like us to win the next game but we have to play sharper. thank god it's a 3:30 kickoff start.

    Rest...

They only wanted him to get about 16-17 snaps...

They followed through with that plan...
