    • “This spring is where most of the growth will happen at.” Hinzman says “I don’t want to waste an opportunity” to play next to some of the best offensive linemen in the country as the Buckeyes’ potential starting center.
    • Hinzman says there was “some nervousness” about playing with the first-team Buckeyes at first, but that “after the first day, I’ve never felt more comfortable playing with the guys I do.” Hinzman says he’s leaning heavily on the rest of his offensive line and isn’t worrying about trying to be a “superstar” at this stage in his development.
    • Hinzman says his background as a dairy farmer helped instill a hard-working mindset into him at a young age. “I never looked at that as work, I never looked at that as chores. We just looked at it as this is what we gotta do today.” Hinzman says he’s applied that work ethic to his football career and that is “probably the whole key to my success.”
    • Hinzman calls Victor Cutler “a great competitor” and says he’s played “a lot more football than I have.” But Hinzman says Cutler transferring to Ohio State gave him an “extra drive” to work harder to try and earn the starting center spot.

    C CARSON HINZMAN
The Buckeye D-line gave Ohio State’s retooled offensive front plenty of problems on Saturday, and Day said Justin Frye’s group hasn’t quite found its best five players just yet. But nothing we saw from the Buckeyes’ two top centers refuted the notion that second-year OL Carson Hinzman is the clubhouse leader at the position.

While Lousiana-Monroe transfer Victor Cutler had some shaky snaps with the second-team offense, Hinzman anchored the first-team unit and Day said he didn’t notice the Wisconsin native a whole lot – which is a plus for a center.

“There's been good progress there. I think you can see it,” Day said. “When you don't notice a center, that's a good thing. Again, still early on, not even halfway through spring practice. But he's been a bright spot so far.”

    • Day says he isn't ready to say Carson Hinzman has locked down a starting spot at the center position just yet.

    • Hinzman said Joe Philbin has shared incredible knowledge with Ohio State's offensive linemen since he arrived in the offseason. "Coach Philbin, absolutely phenomenal coach," Hinzman said. "He is super wise in his teachings. ... He was a great addition." He added that the Buckeyes are "glad to have him" as their coach.
    • Hinzman said it was an eye-opening experience last fall to line up opposite of Mike Hall Jr. and Tyleik Williams as a freshman. He said practices in the 2022 regular season, spring practices and this year's preseason camp have allowed him to feel more comfortable in his abilities, even against the best players in the nation.
    • Hinzman said he had not snapped a football until late August last season. One of the first snaps he took, "I sent it over Kyle (McCord's) head," he said. Now, with experience and knowledge obtained from Frye, Philbin, Sollenne and Wypler, Hinzman feels confident in his ability at the center position.
    • Hinzman on the development of Ohio State's offensive line in fall camp: "We just need a little bit of time," he said. "Going into this offseason – what we've been able to put on the field recently has been more than good enough, if not great. I wouldn't be surprised if we make a run at the Joe Moore."
