    OSU eyes Trojan pledge
Back in August, when the news came about that five-star quarterback Quinn Ewers, an Ohio State commit, was skipping out on his senior season at Southlake Carroll (TX) and heading to Columbus to get started as a student-athlete with the Buckeyes, the question quickly arrived; Will QB coach Corey Dennis and Ryan Day look to fill that spot that Ewers opened up, or will they skip out on a signal-caller in the class?

Initially the name that emerged as a potential option to fill that void was four-star quarterback Drew Allar, a Penn State commit from Medina (OH). While the aforementioned Dennis made a stop to check out Allar in action and discussions between the two parties almost certainly occurred, the idea never seemed to gain much traction.

Fast forward to Tuesday, and a name has now emerged as an option to fill that quarterback spot in the class with four-star quarterback Devin Brown, a USC commit from Corner Canyon (UT), picking up an offer from Ohio State.

Brown, a Top 100 prospect in the class, has been committed to the Trojans since September of last year. The 6-foot-3, 189-pounder has since seen the program part from the head coach that he committed to in Clay Helton, and now other universities across the country are reaching out to Brown to gauge potential interest in a new home for the No. 8 QB in the class.

With Ohio State being the latest program to offer Brown, they join the likes of California, Ole Miss, and UCLA as other schools that offered in September alone and are aiming to flip Brown. As always in these cases, the next step here for the Buckeyes will be to bring Brown on campus for a visit.

If Ohio State is going to add a quarterback to its recruiting class of 2022, it’s likely going to have to poach a commitment from another school.

When Quinn Ewers reclassified and enrolled at Ohio State in August, leaving the Buckeyes without a quarterback commitment for 2022, they initially focused their efforts on trying to flip Penn State commitment Drew Allar, a Medina, Ohio product who has soared up the rankings to become a top-100 prospect this year. That appears to be a long shot, as Allar has been adamant he remains firmly committed to the Nittany Lions.

The door might be more open with USC commitment Devin Brown, who’s ranked just behind Allar as the No. 8 quarterback and No. 95 overall prospect in the 2022 class. Brown has been exploring his options since USC fired Clay Helton in September, and after Ohio State quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis visited his school on Monday, Brown announced Tuesday that he had received an offer from the Buckeyes.

Brown, who visited Ole Miss last weekend (and subsequently made national headlines when he called out an Ole Miss recruiting analyst for quoting him without ever talking to him), told 247Sports’ Bill Kurelic he is interested in Ohio State and will “probably” make an official visit this fall.

There’s no guarantee that Ohio State will sign a quarterback in the 2022 class. Not including Ewers, the Buckeyes have offered just five quarterbacks in the class, and all of them are committed elsewhere. Because Ewers was their top target in the class from the beginning, their efforts to recruit other quarterbacks like Allar and Brown have only ramped up over the last couple of months, and they’re unlikely to sign a lower-rated quarterback just to check a box.

Given the possibility that they could lose at least one of their current quarterbacks to the transfer portal after this season, though, they’d love to convince a talented high school senior like Brown to join their quarterback room and give them another potential future starter at the position.

massive step in the right direction
The current quarterback room in Columbus has an embarrassment of riches, but that hasn’t stopped Ryan Day from wanting more. Knowing the college football landscape today, coach Day understands that you certainly can’t bank on your roster never changing, and that in many reasons is why he along with Corey Dennis and Mark Pantoni have worked tirelessly for another QB in this current cycle.

Sure, the Buckeyes had the top guy in the fold with Quinn Ewers, but his reclassification obviously reshuffled the thought process. Thanks to Penn State extending James Franklin, the Buckeyes and their pursuit of in-state QB Drew Allar has come to pass. But that’s okay, because Ohio State has had their eyes set on Utah product Devin Brown as of late.

Fresh off of Brown being on campus last weekend for an official visit, the four-star came away very impressed with the Buckeyes, and it makes sense considering what he saw current signal caller CJ Stroud do in just one half of football in a shellacking of Michigan State.

On Wednesday, the biggest step towards Ohio State being a legitimate contender for Brown took place when he took to his Twitter account to announce that he had officially de-committed from USC. Maybe it’s a mere coincidence, but this decision coming not even a full week after he left Columbus, you just have to think the Buckeyes did enough to show Brown why they’re the best fit for him, and specifically the development they offer at the quarterback position.

Brown has been the most talked about and probably the fastest rising player this late in the cycle, but Ohio State is looking pretty solid as it stands right now. It’s not a sure thing by any means, as Brown also recently visited Texas, but again, the decision coming now does give the notion that things went very well while he was on his official visit. He’s made it clear that competition brings out the best in him in regards to how full the Buckeyes quarterback room is currently, and seeing his performance at the Elite 11 and his senior highlight tape, this kid is the real deal.

The nation’s fifth-best QB in the class has already heard from the leader in the 2022 class, C.J. Hicks, last night on Twitter, and if it says anything more, Director of Player Personnel Mark Pantoni shared Hicks’ tweet. It’s not over, but this looks to be trending in a positive manner.
