With Cade Stover playing on defense ahead of the Rose Bowl, Kevin Wilson says redshirt freshman Joe Royer will actually be TE2 behind Jeremy Ruckert on Saturday, with Mitch Rossi being "kind of the fullback tight end."

    • Wilson says Joe Royer is "knocking on the door" of making some real strides at the tight end position for Ohio State.

    TE JOE ROYER
One of two names (along with Babb) that C.J. Stroud recently listed as Buckeyes who are flying under the radar this offseason, redshirt sophomore Joe Royer has a chance to have a breakout season at tight end in 2022, and the spring game could give fans a strong indication of why that is. With Jeremy Ruckert gone from the position room, things are wide open for a tight end to make a statement this offseason, and despite having played just 34 snaps last season, Royer is right in the mix as a top candidate to do exactly that.

Cade Stover may be penciled in as the top tight end for Kevin Wilson and company after switching back from linebacker, but Royer is the more natural pass-catcher of the two and has a chance to showcase that skill set on Saturday.

    • Royer says last year was “probably one of the hardest years of my life” between dealing with injury and the passing of his mother. Royer says he’s “in a good spot mentally and physically” and that he’s “just trying to make her proud still.”
    • Royer says he has a “different outlook on life” after the passing of his mother and that he doesn’t “take things or people for granted as much as I used to.”
    • On Keenan Bailey, Royer says they were already close before he was named the Buckeyes’ tight ends coach and that it’s been great having him in that role. Royer says Bailey is a “first one in, last one out” type of guy.
    • Royer says he’s “super excited” Cade Stover is coming back to the team and that he’s fighting to be the Buckeyes’ second TE behind Stover this season.
