2021 QB Kyle McCord excited by Ohio State offer
Ohio State has now offered four 2021 quarterbacks after Wednesday’s offer to Philadelphia (Pa.) St. Joseph’s Kyle McCord.

Following a sensational sophomore year that saw McCord compete 66 percent of his passes for a school record 2,883 yards and 38 touchdowns, McCord’s recruitment has really taken off in recent weeks. He already held offers from Penn State, Michigan, North Carolina and Baylor — and early on Thursday added Virginia Tech as well.

“[Ohio State receivers coach] Brian Hartline came by today,” McCord told Lettermen Row. “It was huge [getting the offer]. Obviously, after what they did this year, winning the Big Ten and then the Rose Bowl, it’s pretty neat to have an offer from them.

“On top of that I think my game is really similar to Dwayne Haskins, too. I feel like I’d fit the system well.”

McCord is 6-foot-3, 195-pounds and currently unranked according to the 247Sports.com rankings, but he’s become a hot name on the recruiting trail.

“I’ve visited Penn State, Michigan, Georgia, Stanford, Clemson and a few others,” McCord said. “I think I’ll take a visit to Ohio State in February at some point. My dad spoke to Ryan Day on the phone, and I think I’ll have a conversation with him at some point in the next week.”

Part of Ohio State’s appeal for McCord and his father, who played quarterback at Rutgers in the late 80s, is Day.

“Top talent at [the college] level trusts in him,” he said. “They trust that he will get them ready for the next level. With all the possible options Dwayne Haskins and Justin Fields had on where they wanted to go to college, and to pick Ohio State and Coach Day? That speaks volumes to me.”

Kyle McCord loves first visit to Ohio State
The Buckeyes are still looking for a fourth quarterback in 2019 — or maybe a second in 2020. But they’ve not forgotten to make a push for a prospect at that position in 2021.

One of Ohio State’s top prospects at the position is recently offered Philadelphia star Kyle McCord. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound sophomore made his first visit to Columbus over the weekend along with two teammates at St. Joseph’s.

“I didn’t really have any expectations set for Saturday, but obviously I knew about the great history at Ohio State,” McCord told Lettermen Row. “I was blown away with the visit. The most impressive thing out of everything was just the people — the coaches and players.

“I loved talking to Coach [Ryan] Day and [quarterbacks] Coach [Mike] Yurcich and also getting to hear some of the current players talk. That really jumped out to me. Just how genuine the coaches were. While I was talking to them I could just tell they really cared about me. That was huge.”

Ryan Day spent some considerable time with McCord on a one-on-one basis.

“He was great, and plus with his background with quarterbacks, he seems like the perfect coach for me,” McCord said. “The only interaction that I had with him before the basketball game was his introduction, however I had a meeting with him after the game. He told me I was at the top of their list. They want me to visit again in a few months with my family and then possibly once more in June.”

The Buckeyes have offered only a handful of 2021 quarterbacks, but McCord, along with Illinois prospect J.J. McCarthy, seems to be topping the list right now. They’ll have to contend with a number of schools for each player, but Penn State is expected to be the biggest competitor for the fast-rising prospect from Pennsylvania. As a kid from a big city, Columbus felt comfortable for McCord.

“From what I saw, Columbus seems like a great place to be,” McCord said. “For my first time being out there, it was a great experience.”

Kyle McCord High on Ohio State Before Visit
Four-star 2021 quarterback Kyle McCord is making the trip from Pennsylvania into Columbus this weekend to attend the Spring Game on Saturday, and his expectations are sky-high.

“I’m expecting it to be my best visit yet,” McCord said. “I’ve talked to the coaching staff a bunch, and we’ve went over what to expect for the weekend and I’m really excited. It should be a great time.”

The St. Joseph’s Prep quarterback was just rated as the No. 8 quarterback in the class by 247Sports earlier this week, and his teammate, four-star wideout Marvin Harrison Jr., was rated as the No. 6 receiver.

The two Philadelphia playmakers connected 50 times for 725 yards and eight touchdowns as sophomores in 2018, and McCord said they are “best friends on and off the field.” They’re both very high on the Buckeyes heading into the weekend.

“We both feel the same way about Ohio State,” McCord said. “We are both getting recruited the most by OSU, and we both really like it out in Columbus. Ohio State is at the top of both of our lists.”

McCord said he has been in contact with quarterbacks coach Mike Yurcich, wide receivers coach Brian Hartline and head coach Ryan Day, who originally reached out to McCord’s father to show interest in the 2021 field general. McCord has been mostly in touch with Yurcich though.

After his visit to Columbus, which is the only visit on his calendar at the moment, McCord said he might schedule spring visits with schools, particularly Clemson, Texas A&M and Penn State.

Kyle McCord likes Ohio State, decision timeline in place
Ohio State has its sights on a 2021 quarterback, and though it didn’t happen this weekend, a possible commitment from St. Joseph’s Prep (Philadelphia) 4-star prospect Kyle McCord could be coming in the near future.

“I wanted to hold off for now — Ohio State is still my top school in the process, but I want to take a couple more visits before I commit anywhere,” McCord told Lettermen Row after this three-day visit to Columbus. “It was hard not to commit on the spot given that Ohio State is such a high-caliber program, but I felt it was best to wait a little longer. I think I’ll announce my college commitment in May or June.”

Before that decision comes, McCord needs to make a couple of other visits. It’s the biggest decision of his young life, and there’s no reason to hurry.

“I need to get to Texas A&M and Clemson,” he said. “Maybe Penn State.”

Other trips notwithstanding, the country’s eighth-ranked pro-style quarterback is very high on Ohio State.

“I really love it out there,” he said. “My parents absolutely loved it. It was their first time in Ohio, and they loved every second of it. My dad was really impressed with the football and my mom, she’s a teacher, was really impressed with the academics.”

Ryan Day’s influence continues to be felt in the recruitment of McCord.

“I really like Coach Day as a coach, but on top of that he’s an even better man off the field,” McCord said. “I feel like he would do a great job preparing me for the next level. A bunch of his concepts are straight from the NFL, and the list of guys he’s coached is ridiculous. I feel like I fit his system well, and we are starting to build a great relationship.”

Ohio State quarterbacks coach Mike Yurcich has been very heavily involved with McCord as well and will go see the 6-foot-4, 195-pound sophomore in May.
