    Mike Conley
    Point Guard | Utah Jazz
Just as it looked like Mike Conley and the Utah Jazz had things back in order, the veteran point guard really struggled over the past week, shooting 6-of-25 from the field and scoring a total of 20 points over 84 minutes spread across three games. The Jazz lost two of the three games to start the month that Conley appeared in, with the only win coming in overtime last Wednesday against the Houston Rockets.

To try and snap Conley out of his recent funk, Utah did hold the point guard out of Sunday’s game against Oklahoma City. While the Jazz were able to defeat the Thunder, it didn’t help Conley much the next night, as Utah fell 111-103 at Dallas. At least Conley did have a notable bucket, as he scored his 14,000th point in the NBA. Conley and the Jazz have to be careful, because Dallas and Denver are nipping at Utah’s heels, and a couple losses could see the Jazz fall in the Western Conference standings.

    MIKE CONLEY
    • Team: Minnesota Timberwolves
    • Year: 16
    • Stats: 10.5 PPG, 40.4 FG%, 35.8 3FG%, 7.6 APG
The longest-tenured NBA Buckeye started his fourth season with the Utah Jazz (and 16th overall) in 2022-23, but was traded to the Timberwolves as part of the same three-team deal that landed Russell back in Los Angeles. Through 43 games with the Jazz and three in Minnesota, Conley’s averaging his fewest points (10.5) since his rookie season in Memphis. But Conley’s 7.6 assists per game would be the most of his career should he finish the season with the same average. While the Jazz sit in 11th place in the Western Conference, Conley will now be in the thick of the playoff hunt with the Timberwolves in eighth place entering All-Star Weekend.

    G MIKE CONLEY
    • Team: Minnesota Timberwolves (42-40)
    • Year: 16
    • Stats: 11.9 PPG, 42.8 FG%, 38.5 3FG%, 6.7 APG
    • Postseason: Lost in first round (4-1, Nuggets)
Traded from the Utah Jazz, with whom he spent three-and-a-half seasons, midway through the year, Ohio State’s longest-tenured NBA player averaged at least 10 points and four assists per game for the 15th consecutive year.

Scoring 14 points per game in 24 appearances for the Timberwolves, Conley helped his new team to the eighth seed in the Western Conference by the end of the regular season. Minnesota lost its first play-in game to the Lakers, but bounced back with a blowout victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder to earn a spot in the first round of the playoffs. However, Conley and company only lasted five games as the top-seeded Nuggets took the series in April. Conley scored 19 points in the Timberwolves’ lone win over Denver.

Conley’s 30.5 minutes per game were his most in four seasons, and he registered a career-high 6.7 assists per game in his 16th season in the league.

Mike Conley - Guard - Minnesota Timberwolves
The fourth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft is now in his 17th season in the NBA. Minneapolis has been a great fit for Conley since the Timberwolves acquired the Buckeye point guard before last season’s trade deadline. Minnesota entered the All-Star break with a 39-16 record, which is the best record in the Eastern Conference. With stars like Anthony Edwards, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Rudy Gobert lining up with him, the spotlight isn’t shining on Conley nearly as brightly as it was earlier in his career in Memphis.

In the 50 games he has played so far this season, Conley is averaging 10.6 points per game and 6.4 assists per game. Even though Conley hasn’t hit the 20-point mark on the scoresheet so far this year, he has five games with 10 assists. Head coach Chris Finch has done a great job at getting Conley minutes, but not overworking him, as Conley is seeing 29 minutes of playing time per game. Minnesota recently added to their depth behind Conley, acquiring point guard Monte Morris from Detroit earlier this month.

On Monday afternoon news came out that Conley and the Timberwolves have agreed to a two-year extension, keeping the point guard in Minnesota until the 2025-26 season. Unless there is a trade or buyout, Conley could be wrapping up his career in the Twin Cities. Not to say Conley won’t play in the league beyond this extension, but it’s not very often we see players spend nearly 20 years playing in the NBA. At least the former Buckeye is playing with a team that is looking like it could make a deep run in the playoffs, and he can finally earn his first NBA title.

The Timberwolves are going to need Conley’s experience over the next few months, since they’ll not only be trying to hold off teams like the Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, and Oklahoma City Thunder for the top spot in the Western Conference, once the playoffs begin there will be plenty of tough matchups waiting for them. Luka Doncic, LeBron James, and Steph Curry are superstars whom Minnesota could match up in the first round.
