Ohio State welcomed Akron Archbishop Hoban four-star linebacker DeaMonte Trayanum to campus on Friday, which marked his first trip to Columbus since the Buckeyes offered him a scholarship in late January.

“The visit went great,” Trayanum told Eleven Warriors. “That was the first time that I got to see the facilities and campus. It was really a great experience getting to talk to most of the coaches.”

The 6-foot, 205-pound Trayanum is considered the 10th-best outside linebacker and No. 170 prospect overall in the Class of 2020, as he recorded 120 tackles, 20 tackles for a loss, 14 sacks, five pass breaks ups, one interception and one forced fumble to help the Knights to their third-consecutive state championship last season. He also rushed for 850 yards and 13 touchdowns as a part-time running back, which is the position Ohio State would have him play at the next level.

With that said, Trayanum and Hoban strength and conditioning coach Michael Winkler spent a considerable amount of time on the visit with Meyer, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Ryan Day and running backs coach Tony Alford.

“They said to keep doing what I’m doing and the sky is the limit,” Trayanum said.

Trayanum — who also holds early offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Toledo and West Virginia — is in no hurry to make a decision on his future and hopes to simply enjoy the process for the time being. He will, however, be on campus for the Buckeyes’ season opener against Oregon State.

NEXT IN LINE
McIntosh was quick to dismiss the level of competition at last weekend’s event — “It doesn’t compare to South Florida." But that said, he was outshined by Akron Archbishop Hoban four-star DeaMonte Trayanum, who was without a doubt the most impressive running back in attendance.

The 5-foot-11, 215-pound Trayanum finished the event with a 115.59 SPARQ rating, which takes into account height, weight and workout scores — including the 40-yard dash, pro-agility shuffle, power ball toss and vertical jump. It was the highest among running backs and sixth among all participants.

“It was a great experience,” Trayanum told Eleven Warriors. “I got to compete with the best in my region, just battling all day.”

In January, Trayanum became just the second prospect in his class to pick up an offer from Ohio State. He then visited campus for the first time last month.

“It was a great experience,” Trayanum said. “I got to see how practice was and I got to talk to coach [Urban] Meyer, coach [Ryan] Day and coach Alford, just realizing how great they are. I’d love to be coached by them.”

Trayanum is actually listed as the 10th-best linebacker and No. 173 prospect overall in the Class of 2020, but most schools are recruiting him as a running back. He already holds offers from Boston College, Michigan, Notre Dame, Rutgers, Toledo and West Virginia, while Alabama and Penn State have also shown interest.

“I’m just trying to enjoy the experience. Not let it get too stressful and just have fun with it,” Trayanum said, noting education, playing time and the program’s support system are the most important factors in his recruitment.

Trayanum plans to return for an unofficial visit for the season opener against Oregon State.

“I just really want to enjoy the behind-the-scenes experience,” he said.

That said, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Trayanum pledge his services to the Buckeyes that weekend. Though he’s in no hurry to make a decision, he also wants to get the process out of the way early and work toward early enrollment.

 

Ohio athlete DeaMonte Trayanum priority target for Buckeyes

Ohio native and 2020 athlete DeaMonte Trayanum has already burst onto the recruiting scene. Alongside 5-star tackle Paris Johnson Jr. and 4-star defensive end Darrion Henry, Trayanum is one of just three in-state prospects to earn an offer from the Buckeyes in the 2020 class.

“That was my first offer, so I was pretty ecstatic about that,” Trayanum told Land of 10. “It’s a great move if I decide to stay in-state. I just know that the whole state of Ohio would be behind me.”

Though it’s early in his process, Trayanum already has been to Ohio State multiple times. The most recent trip was to take in one of the team’s spring practices. While many young players can be intimidated by the depth chart at a place like Ohio State, Trayanum sees opportunity.

“My main guy is the offensive coordinator, Coach [Ryan] Day. He’s a great dude. Him and the running backs coach, Coach [Tony] Alford. I went to a spring practice at Ohio State last month and it was great. It was intense. You could definitely see the difference between the ones and twos,” Trayanum said. “Everybody says it’s a talent thing at O-State, but if you’ve got the talent, it’s going to be displayed.”

Trayanum is a 4-star prospect, ranked as the No. 173 prospect overall and No. 10 outside linebacker by 247Sports. However, linebacker may not be Trayanum’s future position. He doesn’t necessarily have the height of an outside linebacker and is more comfortable at running back.

“When I was growing up, I’ve always been a running back. The linebacker role is what my team needs me as, but I’m embracing it and running with it,” Trayanum said. “With colleges, it just depends what the team needs me on and what the fit is. Ohio State sees me as both, they probably won’t tell me until my senior year. Michigan and Notre Dame are the same way.”

Michigan will be one of Ohio State’s main competitors for Trayanum. Though the Buckeyes are no strangers to Archbishop Hoban — they landed commitments from, but did not sign, former Hoban products Todd Sibley and Danny Clark in the 2017 class — there’s a future Wolverines player at the school recruiting on Michigan’s behalf.

“I have a teammate [Michigan guard commit Nolan Rumler] going up there. I like the program and Coach Don Brown, he’s in love with me up there,” Trayanum said. “He wants me to come up there instead of staying in-state. Nolan is pushing me, too.

“I just know I would have [Rumler’s] support and the coaches’ support. There’s a lot of connections and I know a lot of the players up there because I’ve been there two or three times. I’ve got to experience and talk with them. Having Nolan’s family backing me instead of my family — because my family is in Ohio and most of his family is in Michigan — I would have his whole family backing me, too.”

Trayanum also described Notre Dame, another top contender, as a “perfect fit” and “great school” that resembles his current environment at Hoban. The parochial school draw is often a major advantage for the Irish.

Ohio State, Notre Dame and Michigan were Trayanum’s first three offers, and many have speculated that he won’t need to go beyond that trio to find his eventual landing spot. He insists he won’t be deciding any time soon, however.

“I don’t know man, I honestly don’t know. It’s really going to come down to my senior year and how I feel. Right now, I’m just enjoying the process,” Trayanum said. “I’m not going to decide any time soon. Probably after my junior year, because I want to early enroll during my senior year.”

For now, Trayanum is working hard to become the best player in the state. He’s ranked as the No. 3 player in Ohio currently, but he has no plans on staying in that spot.

“I am, I’m very competitive. My work ethic, I just don’t stop. I always work well against the best until I am the best. I’m trying to get better at everything,” Trayanum said. “I want to be the guy that a coach goes to to do anything, just anything the team needs.”
