Default '14 MN PG - Tyus Jones (Duke Verbal)

Rivals Profile
Scout Profile
ESPN Profile

Point guard
Apple Valley, Minnesota
AAU: Minnesota Magic
Ht: 6'1"
Wt: 175
Class:2014 (High School)

Quote:
Strengths:
Tyus is an extremely mature and poised basketball player. He has the unique ability to make the players around him better. He will not wow you with individual excellence or 40 point scoring prowess. He is not a 5 minute evaluation. His game is one that must be watched and admired over time. He has a good handle and can get in the lane when needed. He is an excellent passer and facilitator, that is the best part of his game. He has the ability to score when needed but prefers to pass.

Weaknesses:
He needs to improve his outside stroke and be a little more aggressive with his style.

Bottom Line:
Jones is smooth and plays with no wasted motion. He makes the right play at the right time, be it a pass, a steal, a rebound or a basket. His basketball IQ is phenomenal for a player so young. He understands how to win and what it takes to win. He is a solid shooter to 19 feet but rarely forces anything. Jones is a talent with a great future. His game is similar to that of Jason Kidd at this early stage.

Tyus Jones Making A National Name For Himself Basketball Recruiting
by Chris Monter

Tyus JonesTyus Jones, a 6-foot-1 freshman point guard from Apple Valley (MN) High, is receiving plenty of national attention after a strong spring with the Howard Pulley AAU program. Jones will play this weekend in Los Angeles this weekend in the final EYBL event and will travel to Colorado Springs next month for the U.S. 16-and-under national team tryouts. GopherHole.com recently caught up with Jones to talk about his AAU season and playing for Team USA.

Jones averaged 18.8 points and eight assists per game as a freshman, leading Apple Valley to a 19-10 mark this season, losing to Lakeville South 74-58 in the Class AAAA, Section 3 finals. He missed 13 games with a lacerated kidney that he suffered in the season opener against St. Louis Park. Jones scored 19 points and dished 11 assists in the game, but he took a fall late in the game and suffered the injury.

Joines made a name for himself locally as an eighth grade starter for the Eagles. Jones expanded his reputation to a national level after playing well at several national AAU events and traveling to Colorado Springs as 31 of the nation's top 14 and 15 year old players competed in the USA Basketball Developmental National Team mini-camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center last October.

Jones was considered one of the top players there and has a good chance of making the U.S. 16-and-under national team next summer.

Jones averaged 16.5 points per game and leads the Metro area in assists as an eighth grader. Jones scored in double figures in 21 of 28 games as the Eagles finished 20-8, losing to Eastview 78-66 in the Class 4A, Section 3 semifinals.

Jones has attracted the attention of several top programs, including the Golden Gophers.

GopherHole.com recently caught up with Jones to talk about his AAU season and playing for Team USA.

GH: You have had back-to-back weekends off, yet I have seen you at basketball tournament the past two weekends. What do you during your time off? Do you get to rest a little bit?

"I am resting, definitely. I am still at the gyms watching tournaments and see a couple of buddies play. I am resting and icing and getting ready for this weekend out in L.A."

GH: When you are watching games at tournaments, are you watching more to watch your buddies or are you trying to pick up some things?

"I definitely try to relax and watch my buddies play, but I try to see some little things that they do and other players do that can help my game, but I am definitely trying to watch and cheer my guys on."

Tyus Jones stands out at his position

With a weak crop of point guards in 2012 and the best 2013 ones not in attendance at Peach Jam, many onlookers have been highly impressed with the play of rising sophomore Tyus Jones.

One person even said he might be better now than any point guard in the class of 2012.

"I've been playing well," Jones said. "I haven't been trying to do too much."

The 6-footer from Apple Valley (Minn.) controls tempo very effectively and knows how to find teammates on the run. Jones attacks the basket and can finish, while also showing an ability to knock down outside shots.

Although it's early, Jones has offers from Iowa and Baylor, with interest coming from Minnesota, Michigan State, Ohio State, Arizona, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Florida.

Tyus Jones Attracts A Crowd At Open Gym Basketball Recruiting
by Chris Monter

Local high school teams should be even more nervous when they face Apple Valley this year. Tyus Jones, a 6-foot-2 sophomore point guard, has grown another inch and now is dunking the basketball with ease. GopherHole.com watched Jones play at Lakeville South in a fall league Saturday morning and Sunday night at an open gym at Apple Valley High along with four high major college assistant coaches. GopherHole.com caught up with Jones to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Jones, who helped lead the USA team to the gold medal at the FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship in Cancun, Mexico in June, made a name for himself locally as an eighth-grade starter. Jones averaged 16.5 points per game two seasons ago and lead the Metro area in assists as an eighth grader. Jones scored in double figures in 21 of 28 games, and the Eagles finished 20-8.

During his freshman season this past winter, he averaged 18.8 points and eight assists per game for the team which went 19-10 despite missing 13 games with a lacerated kidney that he suffered in the season opener against St. Louis Park.

Jones has attracted the attention of many of the top basketball programs in the country, including the University of Minnesota.

Gopher assistant coach Vince Taylor was at Apple Valley last week along with Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. Arizona associate head coach James Whitford, Providence assistant Bob Simon, Iowa assistant Andrew Francis and Duke assistant Jeff Capel were in attendance at the open gym Sunday.

Are Gophers in the picture for big-time recruit Tyus Jones?
Amelia Rayno

Tyus Jones is only a sophomore in high school, but he is nonetheless considered the top prospect in the state and one of the bigger prospects nationally, in his 2014 class.
*
Naturally, the local D-I school has had its eyes on Jones for some time. But Minnesota is just one of many elite schools whose interest he’s attracted – and apparently one that for now has not made his top-end list.
Jones seems intent on going to the same college as friend and fellow recruit Jahlil Okafor, a 6-10 center from Chicago. In an interview with C2C Hoops, Jones lists four schools he and Okafor are seriously considering: Arizona, Michigan State, Ohio State and Duke. He mentions that Minnesota “of course” has been heavily recruiting him but he doesn’t seem too interested in the school. A lot can happen, of course, between now and 2014.

Notes on Jones:

•The 6-1, 171-pound point guard plays traveling basketball with Howard Pulley.
•Played in the FIBA Americas U16 championship for men in Mexico and had 28 assists in the tournament; his team won the gold medal.
•Competed in the Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, S.C., and wowed D-I coaches like Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and Syracuse's Jim Boeheim; had a 31-point game.
•Scored 18.3 ppg in 13 games during his freshman season at Apple Valley High School.
•Has received offers from Minnesota, Arizona, Iowa State, Michigan State, Ohio State, Baylor and Marquette.
•According to ESPN scouting, Jones has a great basketball IQ and is described as a very mature player who makes the right play at the right time, whether it is a pass, rebound, basket or a steal. He is a pass-first point guard but can score when necessary.

Led by Apple Valley's Tyus Jones, the future of MN hoops is bright

November, 22, 2011
By Christopher Parish

Carlos Gonzalez/ESPNHSApple Valley sophomore Tyus Jones, rated the nation's No. 5 recruit in the ESPNU 25, is already considered one of the state's best players and has played for Team USA's U16 squad.

This story originally appeared in the Holiday issue of ESPNHS magazine’s Minnesota edition.

Tyus Jones is used to being the young kid. The small kid. The kid who’s got to show his game to prove he belongs.

After all, that’s how it always was growing up. Jones never got the chance to be the big kid, not with his older brother, Jadee, around. Not when his competition towered over him like aspen trees. Not even when he’d go one on one against his mom.

Despite the numerous on-court beatings he took, Tyus gradually proved he could hang with the big kids. Now he’s one of the nation’s best basketball players. Regardless of age.

Only a sophomore, Tyus is rated the nation’s No. 5 player in the ESPNU 25. He’s played for Team USA in the FIBA Americas U16 Championship. And he’s started for Apple Valley since he was an eighth-grader. As a freshman last season he averaged 20.1 points and 7.1 assists per game despite missing 13 games with a lacerated kidney.
