Shannon Scott, a 6-2 setup man from Alpharetta, Ga. (Milton), was on the OSU campus for the football game against Illinois on Sept.26 and Matta has made two visits to watch Scott play in open gyms this fall.
Scott is the son of former North Carolina and NBA guard Charlie Scott. The Tar Heels "are interested" in the younger Scott, his high school coach, David Boyd, told MaxPreps.com, "but they already have a long line of point guards, and at Ohio State he can step in and play. Plus, they have an unbelievable recruiting class (coming in in 2010).”

Shannon just committed to the buckeyes. Nice pickup here. Offut must of known this was kindof coming. Shannon is a nice pickup.

OSU men's basketball: Point guard becomes first 2011 commitment

Before point guard Shannon Scott could make the call to Ohio State coach Thad Matta, he had to make the call to North Carolina coach Roy Williams and Williams' mentor, legendary Tar Heels coach Dean Smith.

Forty years ago, Scott's father, Charlie, became the first black basketball player in the Atlantic Coast Conference when Smith recruited him to North Carolina. Ever since, Shannon's high school coach said, Charlie has sought his former coach's counsel on significant decisions.

"He wanted Shannon to talk to them before making his decision," said David Boyd, Scott's coach at Milton High School in Alpharetta, Ga., an Atlanta suburb.

With the godfathers' blessings, Shannon Scott -- who was not offered a scholarship by North Carolina -- called Matta yesterday and became the first member of Ohio State's 2011 recruiting class.

Williams and Smith "had nothing but positive things to say" about the Ohio State program, Scott said last night. "They said it would be a great situation for me."

Scott, 6 feet 1 and 170 pounds, chose the Buckeyes over Clemson, UCLA and Alabama.

Scott visited campus Sept. 26 and said the football game against Illinois was "a lot of fun.

"It came down to I loved being there even if I didn't play basketball," he said. "It's a fun place to be at, to enjoy being a student. It was the right place for me.

"I would have enjoyed playing in the (Atlantic Coast Conference) a lot, but Ohio State is the place I want to go."

OSU began recruiting Scott last spring after Matta hired Jeff Boals as an assistant. Boals also is trying to land two of Scott's teammates, 6-3 guard Dai-Jon Parker and 6-7 forward Julian Royal.

Milton crushes Dunbar
Georgia school storms to 71-31 lead in 1st-rounder

Dai-Jon Parker rounded a screen, arced a pretty rainbow 3-pointer through the net and shook his hand and wiped it across his chest like it was on fire.
With a blitz of speed, shooting and defense, Alpharetta (Ga.) Milton blazed to a 71-31 lead through three quarters and beat Dunbar 79-53 on Saturday in the first round of the 37th Annual City of Palms Classic at Bishop Verot High School's John J. Nevins Gymnasium.

Forward Evan Nolte, the 37th-ranked sophomore in the nation, had 17 points, and Ohio State commitment Shannon Scott, a junior guard, had 12 points and six assists for Milton (8-0), which had 15 steals while forcing 20 Dunbar turnovers.
