How's our hockey team? I've never followed hockey but would like to witness a game in person sometime.

Michael Arace commentary: Event could cement OSU hockey's emergence
Friday, January 2, 2009 3:11 AM
By Michael Arace
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Ohio State will play host to its annual holiday tournament, the Ohio Hockey Classic, this weekend in Value City Arena. The timing is excellent.
The Blue Jackets are on the road. So here is an opportunity for fans to get a taste of the college game, or to get reacquainted. It can be a treat. The collegians not only play with a high level of skill, they play with a unique physical verve that is rarely found at any other level. Their intensity reverberates. You will feel it in Value City Arena, which is a better hockey arena than basketball arena when there is a crowd of any appreciable size.
It's a good time to get a look at the Buckeyes, who for three seasons were mired in mediocrity but are now emergent. If the Buckeyes can get past Army and if Miami University defeats Clarkson tonight, it will set up a rematch of three previous Classic championship games. And that would be something to see. Miami, currently ranked No. 2, has made itself into a national powerhouse in the past few years. During the same span, Ohio State fell off the map, and it has taken coach John Markell this long to rebuild.

Men's hockey: Goaltender's rise as leader sparks big turnaround
Friday, January 9, 2009 3:01 AM
By Jeremy McLaughlin
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
When the Ohio State men's hockey team needed a leader to keep it composed in tense games last season, it couldn't find one. One mistake led to another, and losses began to accumulate. The Buckeyes won only 12 games.
Finding someone to fill that void, particularly at goaltender, was a priority this season. It took a few games to find that leader, but since sophomore Dustin Carlson emerged as the No. 1 goaltender, the Buckeyes' fortunes and attitude have changed.
Carlson has been a stable presence in goal and an inexperienced offense has jelled into one of nation's best. That combination has helped Ohio State surpass its win total from last season and take the nation's longest current win streak (eight) into a weekend series starting tonight at Bowling Green.
