Someone else’s take on Mullens
Ran across this good, concise scouting report on B.J. Mullens this morning. I agree with pretty much everything it says -- including the last line about the odds of him leaving -- but I’m not sure the writer saw Mullens’ game against UNC Asheville on Monday. Then again, I’m not sure, either, how much Mullens’ performance against UNC Asheville is worth in the long run. West Virginia on Saturday should be a better gauge.

Playing for Thad Matta is definitely not all fun and games, as freshman B.J. Mullens has learned over the last month and change. The 7-foot center has been on an extremely short leash thus far, which should make him a much better player over the long term. Coming off by far his best game of the season—a 19-point, 8 rebound, 3 block effort in an easy win over UNC-Asheville, this seems like as good a time as any to summarize Mullens’ first taste of college basketball.

The minimal amount of high-level coaching Mullens received early in his basketball career has put him at a significant disadvantage early on as a college player. His questionable conditioning, poor fundamentals and lackluster effort have clearly drawn the ire of Coach Matta, and will have to improve significantly if he’s to see increased playing time as the season moves on. Mullens often looks very lazy getting back on defense, will rarely box out for rebounds, and seems very slow to pick up on the defensive concepts that are being asked of him by the coaching staff.

Early Commitment
Four years of waiting has finally ended for Mullens

~ by Stacey Freyer, Ohio State Athletics Communications

The long awaited road to Ohio State has ended for B.J. Mullens, but the destination was one worth waiting for. The freshman center eagerly waited to put on his scarlet and gray uniform since meeting Thad Matta in Georgia five years ago. With a verbal commitment to become a Buckeye prior to his freshman year of high school, Mullens spent his high school days learning and anticipating the day he would finally become an Ohio State basketball player.

For Mullens, the twists and turns most high school athletes encounter during the recruiting process was more a smooth, straight road. In the summer of 2004, Mullens left for a basketball camp in Atlanta, Ga., but never dreamed of what he would return home with.

At the same time, Thad Matta was beginning his coaching career at Ohio State and made the trip to Georgia to begin the search for his upcoming Ohio State stars and a way to turn Buckeye basketball into excellence. It was here when the two paths first crossed.

B.J. Mullens definitely got Illinois' attention in Ohio State's 67-49 loss in Champaign with 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench. But the 7-foot freshman's 2-of-9 free-throw shooting might also have given Illini coaches a strategy for the rematch next month in Columbus.

"The way he shot free throws, we might have to hack-a-Shaq," Illinois coach Bruce Weber said, referring to a familiar NBA strategy against famous free-throw clunker Shaquille O'Neal. "But if (Mullens) shoots free throws better, he's going to be tough to stop."

The kid has a long way to go yet but I can definitely see some improvement from earlier in the season.

I agree, I think he does lead the Big 10 in FG% though.

He's definitely progressing, he's a work in progress but is going to be dominant soon.

I just hope that he stays, I know he was a Buckeye for a very long time basically, but I think the NBA money might be waved in his face.. you never know. I think we can have an awesome team next year if we can keep everyone.
