Ohio State men's basketball: Buckeyes look to earn signature win today
By Bob Baptist
The Columbus Dispatch Sunday February 17, 2013 6:13 AM
For two days late last week in Indianapolis, 20 college basketball writers and broadcasters impersonated members of the NCAA Tournament selection committee, who next month will select, seed and bracket the 68 teams that will play for the national championship.
The mock selection committee considered teams’ performance to this point in the season but did not project beyond that, other than to predict the winners of conference tournaments for the purpose of selecting some teams and seeding others.
Not surprisingly, seven Big Ten teams made the field.
Somewhat surprisingly, Ohio State was the lowest-seeded of the seven — a No. 6 behind Wisconsin (seeded fourth), Illinois (fifth) and Minnesota (sixth) in the bracket.
What’s up with the 13th-ranked team in the country, currently tied for third in the Big Ten standings, appearing no higher than the low 20s on the committee’s S-curve?
Basically, it’s the Buckeyes’ unremarkable body of work so far compared to that of other teams, which includes a couple of holes in their resume that a win at No. 20 Wisconsin today would help fill.
First, Ohio State is 2-6 against teams currently ranked in the top 50 of the Rating Percentage Index. Second, both of the wins, against Michigan and Wisconsin, were at home. The Buckeyes are 0-4 in road games against the top 50; their best road win is at Nebraska, ranked 101st in the RPI.
A win at Wisconsin, 32nd in the RPI, “would be a big boost for us,” Deshaun Thomas said.

Game preview: Ohio State vs. Wisconsin
Sunday February 17, 2013 7:11 AM
Ohio State vs. Wisconsin
1 P.M. TODAY
• Where: Kohl Center, Madison, Wis.
• TV: CBS (Channel 10)
• Radio: WBNS FM/AM (97.1/1460)
• Records: Ohio State 18-6 overall, 8-4 Big Ten; Wisconsin 17-8, 8-4
• Matchup to watch: Ohio State coach Thad Matta said Wisconsin runs the same side-screens for three-point shooters that the Buckeyes had trouble defending against Northwestern. Wisconsin shoots 36.2 percent from outside the arc at home and had 10 threes against Michigan last weekend. Ben Brust and Sam Dekker are the snipers Ohio State must keep an eye on.
• Notable: Ohio State is 1-9 in the Kohl Center since Bo Ryan became Wisconsin coach. The win was last season. … Wisconsin has played eight games against teams ranked in the top 15 and is 4-4 in those games; Ohio State is 1-5. … As a ranked team in Matta’s nine seasons, the Buckeyes are 8-17 on the road against ranked teams. … In Big Ten games, Wisconsin and Ohio State rank 1-2 in fewest points allowed.
• Next: Minnesota, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Value City Arena
