What do we gain from these? Neither of these teams is competitive in football.....

I like them okay. Neither will be in the B1G Championship game any time soon if this deal were to go through...
Some positives to these two:
Maryland (and Under Armor) have invested in building a strong football program over the last few years
Rutgers brings the potential of the NY television market
Maryland brings in the DC market
Both schools are in decent recruiting areas
The Nebraska move was clearly about football. I think that recruiting these schools is more in-line with the B1G's supposed original goals in expansion.

Another upshot is both of these schools are solid academically, they'll fill in sort of like Northwestern... not really standout schools athletically but they'll have four to 6 average and one or two good to great seasons each decade, but excellent educational additions to the conference and a broader geographical base for research studies, recruiting, etc... it benefits the conference on and off field/court.

If both of these schools join what divisions do you see them going to? I would take Rutgers to the leaders and Maryland to the legends.
