Melky Cabrera tests positive for banned substance. Suspended 50 games
Melky Cabrera of San Francisco Giants suspended 50 games - ESPN
I know this is somewhat old news, but I was reading this article talking about the implications for the All Star Game and a new thought on this issue struck me.
If the MLB operated like the NCAA, wouldn't the Giants have to vacate some wins? A 50 game suspensions is pretty standard. A Rod and Manny both served 50 games, but there's something inadequate about that. I think vacated wins should be in order, right?
I know the MLB isn't the NCAA and I know we don't generally like the NCAA and their rulings, but one thing I like is that in the NCAA each school has a compliance department and if they or any of their players don't comply, the school is punished. I think the MLB should be able to punish the Giants for Melky playing with drugs. That would put a lot more pressure on guys to keep each other accountable and pressure the coaching staff and owners to promote an "atmosphere of compliance".

MLB is crazy and how I look at the players, I assume everyone is cheating. The only player I gave a pass was Ken Griffey Jr.

I think it's safe to assume that Greg Maddox was legit too...

What do you guys think of the idea of vacated wins, though? Wouldn't that change the entire tone. A 50 game suspension. Come on... I mean, unless you're the one star on a team that's trying to make a stretch run and they hand down the suspension at the wrong time (which may very well be the scenario for Cabrera) a 50 game suspension is really a slap on the wrist. Hit them and the team where it counts by taking wins away. It's more just and it puts real pressure on them.

MLB should add more to the suspension for the cover-up.
