Payne sets mission for Ohio State camp

With a chest full of offers, defensive back D’Andre Payne is planning to attend a one-day camp at Ohio State next week and prove to the Buckeyes that their assessment of him was dead on.

At 5-foot-9 and 169 pounds, Payne isn’t a towering cover corner, but the attributes the 2014 recruit out of Washington D.C. brings are exactly what Division I coaches are seeking.

“I have good technique,” Payne said. “I have great hips, and I’m fast. A lot of people say I’m kind of a small corner, but it doesn’t phase me. I’ll check anybody. I have heart and I play big.”

Speaking of big, when Ohio State offered Payne earlier this year, it gave the defensive back a kick start to his junior year with Howard D. Woodson High in the fall.

Schools like Arkansas, Auburn, Michigan, Penn State, Miami, Illinois, Georgia and Virginia Tech are among the more than 25 offers Payne has, but the Buckeyes’ interest ranks high.

“It was a big offer,” Payne said. “It’s a great academic school, a great coaching staff and just a great atmosphere.

“I don’t have a top five or top 10 or anything, but it’s one of those schools that I’m highly interested in. Coach (Urban) Meyer has been a great coach at Utah and Florida, and I know he’s going to pick Ohio State back up.”

As for what Payne plans on doing in Columbus next week, that’s easy. He’s there to show his four interceptions -- two for touchdowns -- weren’t a fluke last season.

In short, it’s just more of the same for an all-around athlete that excelled on special teams and at wide receiver as well last fall.

“I do my thing pretty much any time I’m out there,” Payne said. “I’m pretty sure they know what I can do.”
