Ohio State offers Woodbridge's Da'Shawn Hand

On Tuesday, the Buckeyes became the latest school to offer Woodbridge High School sophomore defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand.

Viking head football coach Kevin Smith said that Ohio State’s chief recruiter for this area, assistant coach Zach Smith, had a conversation with Buckeyes defensive line coach Mike Vrabel about Hand. Vrabel, a former All-Pro linebacker for the New England Patriots, told Zach Smith that “this kid is a freak. We need to offer him.”

Georgia Tech assistant coach Al Groh also recently informed Kevin Smith that the Yellow Jackets were offering Hand.

Hand attended the Rivals.com/VTO Sports Elite 100 Showcase this past Saturday at Highland Springs High School in Richmond. Hand was among 204 players from the Virginia/Maryland/Washington D.C. area who participated in the event. Of those 204 players, 57 of them had been offered by Division I or I-AA schools.

Hand was named the MVP for the defensive linemen.

Things will start to pick up for Hand and the area’s other Division I recruits this Sunday when the spring evaluation period begins for college coaches. The period, which runs until May 31, allows college coaches to visit the recruit’s high school.

The coaches, however, are prohibited from having any in-person conversations with the recruit, but they are allowed to write and telephone the recruits.

Hand shared the defensive line MVP award with Brown at the Rivals.com/VTO Sports Elite 100 in Virginia and the two have very different styles. Hand is so athletic and such a rare athlete at his position that it wouldn't be a shock if he took home MVP honors, but he will have to battle Brown and a bunch of other top defensive linemen for the honor.
