Indiana puts hitch in plan to release Schlichter on house arrest
Indiana court officials have temporarily scuttled a plan for gambler and former Ohio State University quarterback Art Schlichter to be placed on house arrest before being shut up in a federal prison for years.
A bond hearing set for today in U.S. District Court in Columbus has been canceled, leaving Schlichter where he’s been since February: in jail.
Schlichter’s attorney Steven S. Nolder said this morning that he still hopes to work out a home-confinement agreement that Indiana officials will agree to.
Schlichter has been charged with state and federal fraud charges for swindling more than 50 people out of as much as $2.5 million in a sports-ticket scheme. He was sentenced Sept. 15 to 10 years in prison on the charges in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.
The plea agreement with federal officials calls for a nine-year prison term, to be served concurrently with the state sentence.

Ex-Ohio St. QB Art Schlichter arrested
EmailPrintComments1
Associated Press
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Former Ohio State and NFL quarterback Art Schlichter has been arrested on charges he violated his bond conditions by twice testing positive for cocaine.
Schlichter, 51, either refused to provide urine samples for drug testing or declined to show up for such testing three times, authorities said.
Schlichter made a brief appearance before a U.S. magistrate judge Thursday in Columbus following his arrest at his central Ohio residence a day earlier.
Schlichter pleaded guilty last year to federal fraud charges stemming from a million-dollar ticket scheme.
Authorities said the former Indianapolis Colts quarterback, whose NFL career was derailed by a gambling addiction, defrauded more than 50 people in the ticket scheme that began in 2008.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the judge says enough is enough and tacks the max he can to the sentence. It's sad to see someone as talented as Schlichter fall so far... but at this point it seems he's only inevitably going to end up in trouble time and time again.... This time I think he goes away for the rest of his life.

He needs to prison for a very very long time. Enough is enough. I don't believe he has any remorse for what he caused his victims, family and friends!

Schlichter to undergo mental-health evaluation
By Kathy Lynn Gray
The Columbus Dispatch
Wednesday February 8, 2012 5:11 AM
A forensic psychologist will meet with Art Schlichter in an attempt to determine why the former Ohio State University football star continues to break the law.
Schlichter, 51, is in jail awaiting sentencing on federal fraud charges. He was supposed to be sentenced yesterday, but the hearing was postponed when U.S. District Judge Michael H. Watson agreed to the exam.
“He recognizes that over the last 30 years he’s been in a pattern of bad repetitive behavior that he needs to stop,” Steven S. Nolder, the federal public defender representing Schlichter, said yesterday.
“He doesn’t know why he’s unable to stop, and he’s hopeful he can find the reason behind these things.”
Schlichter was jailed a year ago and pleaded guilty in federal court in October to fraud for swindling more than $1 million from more than 50 people in a sports-ticket scheme. He was released on house arrest that month but was jailed again Jan. 18 after tests showed he’d been using cocaine.
Mental-health professionals evaluated him at Ohio State’s Harding Hospital in early January, according to court records, and a follow-up visit was planned so his brain’s activity could be mapped and images taken to determine whether there are abnormalities.
That didn’t happen because of his return to jail.
