Jim Cordle is a center at heart.

Given the choice between center (where he played as a freshman and started as a sophomore), guard (where he played for the last 10 games after moving over from center last season) and tackle (where he worked the most the spring), there would be no choice to make.

"I started playing center in fourth grade," Cordle said. "I started out at center here and I played so long at center, obviously it's where I'm most comfortable."

Cordle is also wrapped up in the tradition of recent Ohio State centers, from players like Nick Mangold and LeCharles Bentley. Not that he's complaining. He's just being honest, but he knows the best Ohio State line in the fall might include him playing elsewhere. He also knows that if he has a chance at the NFL, the 6-foot-4, 295-pounder will be playing inside at either center or guard.

"You can't be selfish and want to play a position, and then the rest of the line is subpar," said Cordle, a senior who is a likely candidate for captain. "Whatever the best lineup is, when you can maximize everyone's potential, that's where I'll play."

But, as I've stated before, I like the idea behind Cordle at tackle.

"No. 1, he has great intelligence as a player," Ohio State offensive line coach Jim Bollman said. "Also, he has really good quickness."

And now he knows what he's doing after 15 spring practices.

"The first day, I was like a kindergartner going to school for the first time," Cordle said. "You don't know what's going on. But as things settle down, you get comfortable and when you get comfortable, you get confident."

Cordle played center during the spring game. He'll continue to practice exchanges with the quarterbacks during practice and before games even if he's starting at tackle. He wants to keep his hand in that cookie jar. And there's always a chance he might wind up back in the middle anyway.

During spring quarter, Ohio State offensive lineman Jim Cordle worked out and went to spring football practice, and also took four classes and earned a 3.75 GPA. But his hardest work was on display Friday night.

The charity bowling tournament Cordle planned in his hometown of Lancaster raised more than $18,000 for the county Special Olympics and provided one of the most interactive Buckeye experience for fans that I've seen.

With all 42 lanes in operation and sponsored for at least $200 dollars, the participating fans stayed in their lanes and bowled while the Buckeyes rotated through the lanes.

So you might bowl one frame with Thaddeus Gibson, the next with Dane Sanzenbacher, the next with Cameron Heyward and the next with Kurt Coleman. Or Dan Herron. Or Doug Worthington. Or Anderson Russell. Or Mike Brewster.

I really really really hope he doesn't end up playing tackle. Not that I don't think he's capable of playing tackle, just that the other prospects on the roster that should be playing tackle.

I just saw him at the bars last weekend. The gf went up and talked to him for a little bit too (recognized each other from when she worked at the Fawcett center).

I with you on him playing tackle. If he is out there that means Shugarts isn't ready to go and/or Adams isn't getting it done.

Well Shugarts has been injured for so long it takes a long while to get back into the game at tackle. I just hope he's all healed up and strong so at least Shugarts can step in and relieve Cordle, get those reps in.

i don't think shugarts will be at 100% after the season starts. cordle will have to start if shugarts is not ready. browning is not a tackle we learned that all last year.

JB Shugarts is the x factor IMO. A huge x factor.
