Herron's not the only one vying for that coveted OSU featured back spot. Speedy junior Brandon Saine and freshmen Jaamal Berry and Carlos Hyde are also in the running for Wells' spot.

I think Boom and Saine will make a good combo, but I don't say that with a LOT of confidence.

I want us to be able to use multiple running backs this year.............

I was doing a little research and came up with a comparison that might ease some people'e minds about Boom. He is up to 205 lbs now and is at what the coaches feel is his ideal playing weight (he had bulked up more than that and had to cut weight to get down to 205).
Javon Ringer is an inch shorter and three pound lighter, so they are almost the exact same frame now. I think we would all be pretty comfortable having Ringer in our backfield right now.

I'm sure we will, it should be pretty obvious that Herron and Saine will be the two backs to get the most time though

I've always felt pretty good when Boom has toted the rock. He didn't have fumble issues like Beanie did his first year and he always hits the hole with authority and a mean demeanor. Not to mention that he just has a knack for falling forward.

And when we're on 3rd and 2, that's exactly what we need out of a running back.

I thought he did an excellent job with (I have no idea how to describe them) forward screen passes during the USC game. USC would blitz in, TP would backpedal and toss it forward to Boom for 5-7 yards (it seemed like). He runs hard and can catch, useful skills combined with the rarity of fumbles.

Chief....
I thought Boom had a good game against USC too. We will be fine at RB. Only thing is, if one of them goes down, who do we have on 4th, 5th team? Can one of the other frosh play? Or maybe someonelike Donnie Evege?

I should think that Boom and Saine will be enough to take the carries for the USC game. At the position, stud running backs are few, we might actually have to call upon Jaamal Berry to take some carries despite being in Tressel's dog house. He's 195+ right now and he's shown the willingness and ability to run between the tackles. Unless we decide to really do something out of the box like scheme some runs with Jordan Hall and getting him into space instead of sending him in pointless runs between the tackles ala Mo Wells, it'll be a tough cookie if the injury bandit strikes. The key is creativitiy!
USC, whether they were talking out of their *** or not said they knew exactly what to look for when they played Ohio State (now I think that was meant specifically for the Defense) which has been a criticism of this staff in general for the past couple of years since Troy Smith left, if we don't bring in some ways of giving some creative looks on our offense, we're boned. In the end, all I want, is something that works. We've made mistakes in the past of not continuing with what's worked, especially in big games. I'll admit, I'm an amateur, but when I was at the 2007 National Championship the only time we really had an effective drive was with running. In the 2008 National Championship, power running was working, than we stopped with the power running and with a sudden change in momentum, we lost a very important quarter. We need to have several strategies in our back pocket to utilize when one fails, but if we find one that succeeds, keep hammering them with it until we win.
Now back to Boom. I hope he doesn't get injured, we're in a bit of a tough spot, transitioning to a Beanie Wells-less team, but I think a more balanced team is better in the long run. I don't think we should ever have a team that is overly run happy or overly pass happy, it'll get us into trouble when the key cog gets injured as we've seen.
