Grizzlies want Mike Conley to step up
October 23, 2009 · Filed Under General, Memphis Grizzlies
For most of his short NBA career, Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley has merely been solid.
Entering the league in the 2007-08 season, Conley didn’t shoot particularly well and averaged 9.4 points and 4.2 assists per game.
In his second season the 6-1, 185-pound Conley improved his three-point shooting range and free throw shooting, but the rest of his game didn’t show much improvement.
The time has come for him to make a strong impression on Grizzlies management.
Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports:
Conley has received a strong message. The coaching staff is demanding he be more assertive and in charge of a group that features strong personalities and offensive wills.
Under Hollins, Conley already proved he is a credible NBA point guard. The pressure this season is for Conley to build on his personal gains and prove his position isn’t in need of an upgrade.
“I don’t want to be the weak link,” Conley said. “You want to be a key part of why a team is winning. It forces me to look at the game differently. I’ve got to be a force so that guys can’t sag off me or take me for granted.
“I know people may have given up and lost interest in me, but I use all of that as motivation. The people who doubt me, I try to go out and prove them wrong. I know I can help make this team better. I’m at the point now where I feel like people are going to realize that I belong in this league.”
Conley’s shooting has been good this preaseason. But he must soon prove that he’s capable of being a starter on a winning team.
Beautiful music for Conley without Iverson in his ear
The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal has a story this morning about how much Mike Conley Jr.'s game has improved since he bought a keyboard and learned to play it to drown out the negativity around him.
It also helped that the Grizzlies sent Allen Iverson packing.
"Sometimes you have guys around you that don't want to see you do good. They want to see you mess up," Conley's veteran backup, Jamaal Tinsley, told the newspaper. "I told (Conley) from the beginning 'I'm here to help you.' If we win games, everybody gets paid. At the end of the day, you've got to win."
Conley acknowledged in the story that Iverson's well-publicized rants about wanting to start bothered him. It was no secret that Iverson wanted to supplant Conley, whose performances made him the weakest link among the starters at the time.
"I knew who he was talking about. I was sitting right next to him in the locker room," Conley said. "It's hard to ignore, but it's all good now. It was pressure to a point because it's Allen Iverson. It was tough because he's a guy I looked up to and you care what he has to say. I wanted to help the team, but the whole deal was kind of tough."

Grizzlies extend Conley for five years, $40M
By Mark J. Miller
The word out of Memphis is that fourth-year point guard Mike Conley(notes) got a contract extension right at the deadline Monday night. The deal is for five years and a guaranteed $40 million, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
If the former Ohio State Buckeye meets certain incentives, the deal will go up in value, the paper notes.
That's got to make Conley's dad, Mike Conley Sr., an Olympic gold and silver medalist in the triple jump, awfully proud.
More details on Mike Conley Jr.'s $40 million contract extension with the Memphis Grizzlies. Incentive bonuses could make it worth as much as $45 million, the report notes, but Conley and the Grizzlies would have to get real good for that to happen.

Mike Conley organizes workouts for Memphis Grizzlies
__________
Mike Conley says that as the Grizzlies point guard it's his responsibility to organize workouts during the lockout. "And guys did a great job of keeping their word and coming in on time ready to work," he said.
Mike Conley decided not to wait for an end to the NBA lockout to direct the Grizzlies.
The point guard took charge and mobilized his teammates for a mini-camp in Memphis this week.
Conley, Rudy Gay, Tony Allen, O.J. Mayo, Zach Randolph, Xavier Henry and Sam Young reunited at a local gym early Tuesday. Ish Smith and second-round draft pick Josh Selby were expected to join the group Wednesday.
The Grizzlies will practice together all week minus Darrell Arthur and their foreign teammates. Marc Gasol, Greivis Vasquez and Hamed Haddadi are playing with their national teams in Olympic-qualifying tournaments.
"I've been prepared all summer to do this," Conley said. "It's my job as the point guard. I want to be one of the leaders on the team. And guys did a great job of keeping their word and coming in on time ready to work.
"We found a good week when everybody could come back to Memphis and get some work in. We're going to do it again going forward. We're going to take weeks during the lockout to get together. It might be here. It might be in Las Vegas. Wherever we can get guys to meet and we can get a gym."
Welcome to SportsNation! On Thursday, we'll have Memphis Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley Jr. stopping by to chat about the NBA.
Last year, Conley helped Memphis to by far the Grizzlies' best season since his arrival four years ago. Memphis finished 46-36 and made the playoffs, winning more than 40 games and making the playoffs for the first time in five years. Along the way, Conley posted career highs in points (13.7 ppg) and assists (6.5 apg).
ESPN.com has spent the offseason ranking every player in the NBA, from 1-500, as voted on by 91 NBA experts. Conley was ranked No. 65 on the list.
Being ranked as the 65th best player in the NBA is pretty damn good IMO considering it's a flashy league and Conley plays in Memphis and stays under the radar. If he played in L.A. he'd be a borderline all-star.
He's improved his numbers every season since he's been in the league and now that he'll be getting even more minutes I look for him to finish in the top 5 in the NBA in assists and average about 15ppg and 8ast.
He's proven that he can be more than just Oden's teammate.
