Grizzlies-Pistons postgame: Mike Conley a calming influence
By Ronald Tillery

Posted January 21, 2012 at midnight

Point guard Conley giving Griz a calming influence

O.J. Mayo is on a tear shooting the ball.

Marc Gasol is scoring and rebounding as well as any big man in the NBA.

Rudy Gay has found his scoring touch.

An unheralded part of the Grizzlies' recent success might be Mike Conley's calming influence.

When the Pistons went on a third-quarter run to slice the Grizzlies' 23-point lead to 64-57, Conley righted the ship. The point guard responded with four straight points that pushed their lead back into double digits.

Conley banked in a shot on a runner in the lane, and then stole the ball near midcourt and cruised to the basket for a layup.

"Whenever it gets tight, I think it was Josh Davis who told me that I tend to come up with a bucket or steal or something," Conley said. "I just try not to let some of these games get out of hand."

Update........

Quote:
Mike Conley's perfect start sent the Memphis Grizzlies to an easy victory.

Conley hit his first eight shots en route to a season-high 22 points as the Grizzlies won their sixth straight and moved atop the Southwest Division with a 128-95 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night.

It was just one of those nights where the lane seemed wide open, said Conley, who finished 10 of 13 from the field. ?All the shots were falling and I had to pick it up for my team, keep us afloat and start us off on a good foot.?

Conley is playing good ball right now....

Mike Conley had 20 points and nine assists for the Grizzles, who extended their winning streak to seven games with one of the biggest comebacks in franchise history.

More assertive Mike Conley directs Grizzlies' attack
NBA's steals leader at ease with role on team

Grizzlies guard Mike Conley is averaging 13.2 points per game this season -- but 17 in the team's four-game win streak.

Mike Conley isn't the NBA's assist king or the subject of its latest hype machine so far this season.

However, Conley always seems to give the Grizzlies just what they need. His style -- quietly going about the business of putting the Griz in good hands -- is again evident during a four-game winning streak.

"It's nice to have a point guard that's solid and has a good feel for what you're trying to do," Griz coach Lionel Hollins said.

The Griz go into a road game tonight against the Houston Rockets with their 6-1 point guard in command on both ends of the floor. Conley is posting 17 points per game on 47-percent shooting during the streak -- up from his season averages of 13.2 points on 43-percent shooting.

The NBA steals leader is also averaging 2.8 steals during that stretch.

"I've got more control of my game than I did the last couple of years," Conley said. "Making big plays down the stretch is something I've improved on. I've done a good job of recognizing when to be aggressive and when to facilitate."

Since being the fourth overall pick in the 2007 draft, Conley was dogged by slow starts to the season. He would graduate to being serviceable by season's end. But Conley aimed to prove he could be consistent over the course of a full season. Conley acknowledged, too, that his five-year, $45 million contract extension last season added more pressure.

He started fast a year ago. Now, Conley has developed into an even more assertive player in the early stages of this campaign.

"It's probably more confidence and strength than anything," Hollins said. "But his skill level has gotten a lot better from an offensive perspective. He's being more of a leader. He's being more vocal. He's being who he's supposed to be. He's one of the steals leaders now. He's got all of that quickness and now he utilizes it."

Conley's ability to stay in front of his opponents has earned him a career-high 2.5 steals per game so far. He routinely takes away the ball from opposing guards when they start their dribble. Conley often re-directs traffic into a Grizzlies fast-break by playing the passing lanes with keen perception.

"He's playing to what he wants to do instead of what people make him do out on the court," Griz forward Rudy Gay said. "He's just being more assertive."

No matter how much he scores, Conley never loses sight of his primary responsibility to promote offensive execution and get the ball to the right people down the stretch of games.

His steady hand is marked by a career-best 6.9 assists per game. Conley ranks seventh in the NBA with a 2.86 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Steve Nash, Tony Parker and Chris Paul are the notable floor generals doing better in that category.

It all starts with Conley for the Grizzlies.

"Sometimes I get on him for not being aggressive and attacking, and just trying to set up (teammates) all the time," Hollins said. "But a lot of times that's what this team needs, especially with Zach (Randolph) here. We need a director and he provides that."
