Turner is USBWA player of the year finalist

Ohio State sophomore Evan Turner has been named one of 15 finalists for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, given annually by the United States Basketball Writers Association to its player of the year.

The award will be presented April 3 in Detroit, site of the Final Four this year.

Turner is the only finalist from a Big Ten school. The others are DeJuan Blair of Pittsburgh, Sherron Collins of Kansas, Dante Cunningham of Villanova, Stephen Curry of Davidson, Tyreke Evans of Memphis, Blake Griffin of Oklahoma, Tyler Hansbrough and Ty Lawson of North Carolina, Luke Harangody of Notre Dame, James Harden of Arizona State, Jerel McNeal of Marquette, Jodie Meeks of Kentucky, Hasheem Thabeet of Connecticut and Jeff Teague of Wake Forest.

Hansbrough won the award last year. No player has won it back-to-back since Ralph Sampson of Virginia won three in a row from 1981 through ’83.

Bob Hunter commentary: Another glaring example of what happens when Turner is left to do too much

Sunday, March 1, 2009 3:46 AM
By Bob Hunter

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- When Evan Turner picked up his fourth foul and went to the bench with 10:05 left in the game, a Purdue fan behind press row could be heard encouraging his buddy.

"They've got no offense now," he said.

My mind quickly played back an earlier sequence when the Ohio State sophomore was playing the point, drove the lane past two defenders and kicked the ball out to an open man who drew iron on a shot from behind the arc. And when the ball bounded all the way back out to the corner, it was Turner who was there, tip, tip, tipping the ball and jumping for the rebound, while his teammates seemed stuck in slow motion.

No offense? Exactly. No offense and no life.

A quick check of the box score showed that the five Ohio State players on the floor after Turner went to the bench had a total of 11 points among them, a stat that required no explanation to those who had watched the almost 30 minutes of basketball that had gone before.

It was another one of those OSU games in which the 6-foot-7 swingman was required to do everything -- score, rebound, defend and create offense for his teammates, whether he was on the point or off it. Turner can be sensational, but usually when you see him trying to do it all, his Buckeyes are in deep trouble. And that is just where they were here, on their way to an embarrassing 75-50 loss.

Ohio State basketball: Why we think Evan Turner will be back

by Doug Lesmerises

AP
Ohio State's Evan Turner should be doing this again next season.

Ohio State plays its final game of the regular season Sunday, and the normal Senior Day that accompanies that game will be held only for team managers, because there are no seniors on this team.

Will it be the final home game for any Buckeyes' players? Maybe. But I do not think it's the last time OSU fans will have a chance to cheer Evan Turner. After a long discussion with someone familiar with the situation, I believe Turner will be back for his junior year.

Based on less inside info, I think it's safe for everyone to assume that freshman center B.J. Mullens is headed for the NBA, just like it was safe to assume the same with Greg Oden and Kosta Koufos. Seven-footers with some skill are still at a premium, so Mullens will be drafted on his potential, not his production.

Turner repeats: ‘I’m coming back’

Evan Turner reiterated yesterday what he has said recently when asked whether he’ll consider leaving for the NBA after his sophomore season. He is currently projected as a mid-first-round draft choice and could be named Big Ten player of the year tonight.

“I like college. I like playing with my teammates,” Turner said after the Buckeyes' win over Northwestern. “College basketball is a great game, I’m enjoying it right now. I haven’t really thought about next year. I’m just thinking about the next tournament.

“I think there’s a lot of potential on this team and I want to come back and win some championships, a Big Ten championship, and make it deep into the (NCAA) tournament, hopefully a Final Four and (win) a national championship. I want to be leaving here as a winner . . . and I think we have the potential.”

Turner told WBNS radio on Friday that “without a doubt” he would be back next season. Asked yesterday if that meant he would not “test the water” by submitting his name for early entry, leaving himself the possibility of withdrawing it before the draft, he laughed.

“No,” he said. “I honestly haven’t thought about it. I’m coming back.

“Right now I’ve got to worry about finals. For real. I’ve got to go home and do a paper right now. If I don’t get that done, ya’ll are going to be asking if I’m playing (this week) or not.”
