Turner's Tumble Leaves Him Hoping for a Speedy Recovery

By John Porentas

You often hear it from people who are in violent car accidents or other violent events in which they are injured. It seems like the whole thing happens in slow motion, from the time they see that onrushing semi to the time it hits them and mashes their car.

OSU point forward Evan Turner had one of those slow-motion moments recently, but it didn't involve any kind of trucks, cars, motorcycles, or airplanes. All that was involved in Turner's moment was a steel rim and some hardwood.

"I thought I was in the air for like five or 10 seconds, but I pretty much just fell off the rim and hit the ground pretty quick," said Turner who had the advantage of seeing video of his fall in OSU's 111-60 win over Eastern Michigan.

Thad Matta on the radio mentioned that Evan Turner is doing no contact practice, avoiding any twisting motions, probably just shooting, imo.

He is not cleared yet, but MRI's show improvement in his fractures.

Dispatch

Quote:
Turner could return against Indiana
Evan Turner will be available to play against Indiana on Wednesday night if he makes it through practice tonight without complications, a source close to the program informed The Dispatch this morning.

Turner had an X-ray on his lower back yesterday, but Ohio State did not release any information on the results of the test. Coach Thad Matta said on his call-in show on WBNS radio last night that he would not know the results until after the show.

Asked yesterday on the Big Ten coaches' teleconference whether Turner would play against Indiana, Matta replied, "I don't think so."

The team's orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Grant Jones, said Sunday that Turner could return within a couple of weeks if the X-ray was good and his back was able to tolerate an increase in practice activity.

Turner has missed six games since breaking two bones in his lower back Dec.5 when he fell off the rim after attempting a dunk in a game against Eastern Michigan. Ohio State is 3-3 in those games and has started the Big Ten season 0-2 for the first time in Matta's six seasons.

Matta did not immediately return a text message seeking confirmation that Turner will play against the Hoosiers. Matta is scheduled to meet the media later this morning.

A team spokesman said he had not heard that Turner will play.

Matta says decision on Turner to come Wednesday

Coach Thad Matta did not rule out Evan Turner playing against Indiana during a pregame interview session with the media this morning. But he said he won't make that decision until Wednesday. The Buckeyes play the Hoosiers at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Value City Arena.

Asked directly today whether Turner could be available if he practices tonight and has no complications from the activity -- which The Dispatch reported earlier today -- Matta replied, "I hope so, but I wouldn't count on that."

Turner has missed six games since suffering two broken bones in his lower back when he fell off the rim after attempting a dunk in a game against Eastern Michigan on Dec.5.

In deciding whether to play Turner, Matta said he will have to weigh "No.1, how much can he do, (and) No.2, what’s he feel like tomorrow if he does (an) ample amount tonight?

"We’re not planning on him playing until there’s something good (to see in his condition). I’m hoping here soon we can get the word and everything is good to go. But even then, we have to be careful of what we’re about."

Matta has spoken throughout Turner's time on the sideline as if he will err on the side of caution with his star player. That appears to be true even now, with the Buckeyes having started the Big Ten season 0-2 for the first time in Matta's six seasons as coach.

Matta has not had full use of one leg because of nerve damage from surgery he had two years ago on a herniated disk in his lower back.

"I’ve honestly stayed out of (the process)," he said. "I’ve got no leg to stand on because of a back injury. So I’m good with (whatever the decision is)."
