Miami Heat's Daequan Cook widens his role
Guard Daequan Cook has emerged as one of the Heat's best options off the bench on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

BY SARAH ROTHSCHILD

Dwyane Wade jokingly asked guard Daequan Cook recently what the heck he was thinking when he decided to enter the NBA Draft after his freshman season at Ohio State.

Wade pointed out to Cook that at Marquette he averaged almost 20 points a game before jumping to the NBA. Cook averaged 9.8 points a game for the Buckeyes. But now the two joke about it because Cook is growing into a solid role player for the Heat.

''You can see the kid has talent, and now he's out there showing it,'' Wade said.

Reserve Cook nets 24 as Heat take down Bucks

MILWAUKEE -- Reserve Daequan Cook wasted no time redeeming himself.

A night after teammates questioned if he'd even played in Miami's win at Minnesota following an 0-for-3 performance, Cook hit his first six 3-pointers en route to a career-high 24 points in the Heat's 102-99 victory over Milwaukee on Wednesday night.

Cook is a baller. Hopefully he can pick up a few things from Wade and really become a star. He's got the talent.

Great thing to do for cook. Although I was never a huge fan of his this makes me respect him alot more. Hopefully this helps the family during this horrible time in their life.

Cook has to be more than a shooter

The Miami Heat has Daequan Cook working on his ball-handling during the off-season in hopes he can play more with the ball in his hands and off the dribble next season.

"The scouting report is out there on him," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "The wide-open, standstill jump shots where he's checking for the wind, those are really not available to him anymore. We're expecting him to do more."

Cook is becoming a much better player over time, I wish he would have stayed at OSU but fully understand him leaving, I've heard great things about him from Dwayne Wade though.

Buckeye Stars basketball camp about giving back
By BRIAN McLEAN
Published: Tuesday, August 4, 2009 9:34 AM EDT

Daequan Cook, Greg Oden and Michael Conley are three of the most beloved basketball players in recent Ohio State University history. In some circles, the trio is also among its most misunderstood.

As freshmen in 2006-07, that trio was the driving force behind the Buckeyes winning the Big Ten championship and advancing to the NCAA tournament finals.

A few months later, all three were gone, signing big contracts to play in the NBA -- where all three were first round draft picks.

While none of the group makes any apologies for taking advantage of their opportunities, it would be a mistake to view them as three who simply took the money and ran.
For the second-straight year, Cook, Oden and Conley led the Buckeye Stars Basketball camp at Worthington Kilbourne. This year's camp was Wednesday through Friday, July 29-31.

Children from ages 7-18 learned the fundamentals of the game while having fun with the former OSU players.

"We just wanted to give something back to Columbus," Cook said. "While I was here, I received nothing but support from everyone. We want to show how much Columbus meant to us."

Cook is playing for the Miami Heat. Oden is a Portland Trailblazer and Conley is with the Memphis Grizzlies.

"Playing in the NBA is a new opportunity that I'm really enjoying," Cook said. "Taking that step has been a lot of work, but the people there are great and I'm glad to be a part of the organization."

Oden was the featured player July 29, Conley July 30, and Cook July 31. A number of local high school coaches helped teach the large group of youngsters.

"I've always loved working with kids," Cook said. "Basketball can be a lot of work, but it should always be a lot of fun."

Many OSU fans have spent the past two seasons wondering "what if" Oden, Conley and Cook would've returned to lead the Buckeyes for another season or two.

They're not alone. Whenever the trio gets together, the conversation frequently gets around to the same, what if?

"We always talk about that," Cook said. "What if we would have come back for a second year -- maybe a third year. Life is about making the best decisions you can make in a given situation. I'm happy with the decision I made.

"What's important to me is knowing when I return to Columbus, I'll be welcomed back."

Cook can't seem to avoid his Columbus connection. Playing with him on the Heat is former Dublin Coffman and Notre Dame standout Chris Quinn.

Quinn took part in the camp July 31.

"He's a great guy," Cook said. "He's funny -- always cracking jokes. It's a good relationship between him and I."

"We just wanted to give something back to Columbus. While I was here, I received nothing but support from everyone. We want to show how much Columbus meant to us."
