So what's your guys opinion on Lighty right now, do you want him to play the remainder of the year when he gets back or sit out and take a medical redshirt so he's got 2 more years of eligibility still?

Personally I would like for him to redshirt........I don't think he should rush back.........bones in your foot are very touchy........plus he would have to get back in condition and the time is running out......I just don't see him returning this year........

Lighty's return still far off
Bill Rabinowitz here, filling in for the great Bob Baptist:
Just got back from OSU's news conference heading into tomorrow's game at Indiana. Some highlights:
David Lighty had his left foot X-rayed yesterday to gauge how well he's healing. Buckeyes coach Thad Matta said he hadn't heard the results yet. If it seems odd that Matta didn't know, it's really an indication that Lighty's return is hardly imminent.
Lighty had a screw surgically inserted into his fractured foot, and bone has to grow around the screw as part of the healing process. But Matta wasn't on pins and needles to hear the results because even if the bone has grown sufficiently around the screw, that's only one step in the rehab process. Lighty has to then feel comfortable putting weight on his foot, feel secure making cuts on it and get back into playing shape.
"We're a long way away," Matta said.

Lighty has yet to practice
Back in the saddle, I figured I’d better ask coach Thad Matta about where David Lighty stands in his comeback from a broken left fifth metatarsal that will sideline him for his 15th consecutive game tonight against Minnesota. Here’s a transcript of the Q&A before practice yesterday:
Question: Can we get an update on Lighty’s status?
Matta: He’s still not practicing. He’s (on the) treadmill, shooting, still no cutting.
Q.: Have you thought at all about how long you go before you make a decision whether to redshirt him?
A.: In my mind, I want to see him free (of constraints), capable of doing whatever we’re doing (as a team). He’s going to have to go through some practices just to make sure that everything’s OK.
Q.: If it’s apparent that your team’s record is good enough that you’re going to get a bid to the NCAA Tournament, do you bring him back (no matter how late in the season) just because you’re going to play in the NCAA Tournament?
A.: I don’t know on that one. I honestly don’t know.
The one thing is, I’ve got an obligation to put the best team on the floor for Ohio State. But (by) the same token, I’ve got to do what’s best for my guys in the long run.
My thing is, I just don’t want David to get injured any more, (and) we haven’t been given the clearance that that wouldn’t happen if (he) practiced (now).

Lighty not optimistic
David Lighty crossed paths on the way into Value City Arena tonight with a colleague, John Porentas of theozone.net, and did not sound confident of returning this season.
“I hope so,” Lighty said when asked if he thought he would, “but I doubt it.”
Lighty said that the broken fifth metatarsal on his left foot is “taking longer (to heal) than I thought.”
For coach Thad Matta’s comments on Lighty’s rehabilitation, see the previous post. Matta addressed the issue yesterday before practice.

Ohio State basketball: Lighty's foot very sore after light practice
by Doug Lesmerises
Sunday February 22, 2009, 4:32 PM
Junior forward David Lighty practiced with Ohio State on Saturday. But don't get excited Buckeye fans. He was so sore today, he couldn't even take part in the shootaround before OSU's loss to Illinois.
"He can't walk today because he went yesterday," OSU coach Thad Matta said after a 70-68 loss to Illinois, "which is what we anticipated."
Lighty is more than nine weeks removed from surgery on a broken bone in his right foot, an injury initially reported to have a six- to 12-week recovery period, but the soreness means Lighty still has hurdles to overcome before a possible return. The Buckeyes have four regular season games remaining before the Big Ten Tournament.
Matta said Lighty could not run up and down the court in practice, but he slid in to play defense for a few possessions, and the change in the Buckeyes was obvious.
"It was the most ridiculous thing I've seen in my life," Matta said.
If only he could see it in a game.

Ohio State basketball: What should David Lighty do?
by Doug Lesmerises
Tuesday March 03, 2009, 11:34 AM
David Lighty practiced Sunday, "not everything, but the majority of it," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said.
Then Matta was curious how Lighty would handle practice on Monday, coming back on consecutive days. The report from a team spokesman was that Lighty took part in halfcourt drills only, nothing full court, on what was a light day of practice anyway.
Matta said Monday that his junior forward, out since breaking a bone in his right foot on Dec. 17, will not play tonight at Iowa.

Red shirt him please, as much as I would love to see him play, if he's committed to staying here and playing out his career here, we need him, he would be a GREAT asset in 2010 when we have all those young kids coming in, with arguably the best recruiting class in the nation, I could see us making it to the championship game, and that is even if Mullens and Buford leave, if they don't leave I don't see how we could be stopped in 2010(assuming Turner stays too)
