The ESPN box score is saying he played 6 minutes going 0-2. They really didn't need him with how the rest of the guards were playing.

Buford's role on this squad is to provide scoring off the bench........if his defense continues to improve he may push for more minutes.....

EARNING NEW LETTER

Buckeyes want Buford to be big on defense too

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - Ohio State aggressively recruited William Buford the slasher, William
Buford the explosive leaper and William Buford the scorer.

The Buckeyes are hoping their freshman from Toledo continues evolving into William Buford the defender.

Buford, the former Libbey star who was Ohio's Mr. Basketball last season, came to the Buckeyes with a distinct scoring pedigree. He averaged 23 points per game in his senior season with the Cowboys and scored 29 in the Division II state championship game last spring.

Like Turner Last Season, Buford is Fast Tracking into College Game - Indiana Preview
By John Porentas

Evan Turner and William Buford are starting to have a lot in common.

When the season began a year ago Turner was not in the starting lineup, instead coming off the bench and getting his feet wet a little at a time in the early season. He was a typical freshman with typical freshman problems at times, and the plan was to bring him along during the season in the hopes of having him ready to contribute later in the year.

That all changed when starter Jon Diebler was unable to get his shot going and OSU Head Coach Thad Matta made the decision to insert Turner into the starting lineup and bring Diebler off the bench. Turner brought immediate offense, the ability to get to the rim as well as rebounding. He also brought turnovers while he was finding his way in the college game.

Ohio State's Buford learning on defensive end

By Jason Lloyd
Journal Register News Service

William Buford never worried much about playing defense in high school. After all, his offensive skills were rewarded with the Mr. Basketball award as a senior at Toledo Libbey.

In order to play for Thad Matta at Ohio State, though, Buford needed to learn how to defend.

"I never really had to play defense in high school," Buford said. "I've got to play it now if I want to play. It's a big part of my game."

Buford's crash course in defense began when practices began. Those lessons intensified when he stepped into the starting lineup for David Lighty (VASJ), who is out at least another month — and likely longer — with a broken foot. Now Buford's defense is acceptable, so his offense is again shining through.
