Hey guys just wanted to let you know what I've been working on for the past couple months.

For a while now, I have been researching and testing a new forum platform because we are rapidly approaching unsustainablilty on our current forum installation (vBulletin 3.8.7). In short, vBulletin (our current platform), has been on a creative decline for several years and on top of that they have ended all major support for our series (3.8.7) – as a matter of fact, we have actually been without updates for 2 ½ years now. We cannot keep operating on software that has reached end of life support.

So after a lot of research, experimentation, and thought I have decided that I’ll be migrating our forum over to XenForo, a highly customizible, recommended and powerful forum. Xenforo was actually created (and continues to be developed) by the original creators of vBulletin – they left vBulletin roughly 5 years ago. So, for me at least, it's comforting that that these guys put a lot of effort and creativity into their products and they will continue to do so into the future. We need security updates (and tech support in general).

Why leave vBulletin? Well, they are indeed still in operation, but I greatly dislike their current (and future planned) products (I am not alone… many have already left for Xenforo). The vB software is very buggy and many people are not happy with their support level and the overall direction the company is going.

What do we gain? To name a few, our customization will be broadened extensively (customizations were handcuffed in vB), important updates and support (updates and security fixes being very important for us), mobile friendly (vB was stuck in pre-smart phone/tablet age… we really needed iPhone/ Android/Tablet browser viewing). Posting on your mobile devices will be night and day compared to what we have right now. And many other additions will be added as well (revamped Bookie, notification system, etc).

I know that bringing on (big) changes like this will be unpopular with some people, and that is to be expected. The look of the forum will be different to what many are used to, but we gain a lot in usability. All statistics will be saved and transferred over (posts counts, posts/threads, thanks counts, individual data, etc) so we won’t be losing anything we’ve built over the past 7 years.

Overall, this is a positive (and important) move for the forum… for the future, for everyone. We can’t stay on our current installation much longer.

When will this happen? Anytime now from Wednesday (the 14th) and on. This is a big move and will require work behind the scenes so whenever I find that time is when I will do the migration to the new software.

Downtime? I would expect at least 2 hours... could be less and hopefully not more.

That’s all I have for now… just wanted to give you guys the scoop on what's brewing and coming down the road for the forum. It will be great for everyone when it's all completed.

If you have any questions please ask.
