Schools started making hundreds of millions of dollars off of them, and the value of a college degree has dropped drastically...

I like this movement. I hope athletes are granted rights to their image for commercial use.

However, I don't think that these kids should be on any school's pay roll.

I liked what David Pollack said the other day. Anything that a school profits off of a student athlete should be put into an account and give to the student once they leave the school.

nah. Just let the students have real jobs... commercial work is a real job. Any other student @ the university is allowed to do it, but the athletes aren't allowed, because the universities can't take advantage of their likenesses anymore...

This is a really simple issue. Let the players make money off their likeness, autograph, jersey sales, etc.

The only argument against this is "competitive balance," but who are we kidding?? There is no competitive balance now... In fact, this might level the playing field... It would benefit players to take risks on small schools if they can be an all-star right off the bat instead of going to the powerhouses with massive budgets and facilities.

The only person this hurts is the big universities, which is why it hasn't already happened... That's why I like news like this. I hope universities get hit hard over and over again (USC, TOSU, Miami, Texas A&M, Bama, Tennessee, etc), so that they will be forced to do the right thing.

That wouldn't work either. All it takes is for some rich Booster to entice a recruit to commit to a school, is to offer the recruit big money for his autograph.

Agree, with one exception. I don't think athletes should be granted rights to their image. I think they should be allowed to retain their natural rights to their image without the NCAA usurping that right and claiming it for themselves. Minor, yet significant difference.

I don't think should be allowed to get agents till they opt for the draft. I am ok with these kids allowed to get jobs. I also don't have a problem with the NCAA creating a time frame these guys can sign autographs for money. But the athlete has to report how much they made to the school and NCAA. That money is peanuts what these schools make off of these kids.

I looked at tuition cost at Ohio State for out of state students and it was roughly $25,000 for 2 semesters. That's $100,000 over 4 years. If kids want the big bucks they can pay for school too.

The school's profit from having the players on campus... This would be the case even if they were getting "the big bucks."

That being said, I think that the amount of money to be made is highly over-estimated... If you factor in commercial endorsements and jersey sales (teamwide), you'd also have to consider the fact that most of the commercial jobs are taken, and the schedule of playing football and turning your classwork in would keep you from actually "chasing the dream" year-round...

You could likely pull in upwards of 100-300k if you're a TOP LEVEL athlete (We're talking RGIII, Reggie Bush, etc), and you're not getting paid above the SAG standard principle rates (standard commercial rate for actors)...

don't forget to add the jersey sales, ticket sales, and any other thing these schools make a profit over.
