Jim Tressel coached team: plays safe. Lands solid recruits in Stanford and Madaris. Doesn't touch national recruits unless they take first step.

Urban Meyer: Passes on in state talent of national talent is better. Goes after players like Diggs and Neal.

Downside: higher ranked players feel entitled, have large egos, and are more likely to engage in BMOC behavior, which can cripple team chemistry and (if not closely watched) can bring further sanctions. With constant competition, players are also less likely to "fall in line," which can cause locker room disturbances (see UF in Urban's final year).

Upside: Nat Championships, All Americans, NFL level talent (back to multiple first rounders)...

    Thoughts?

That's ok Euro, that was a good OP.

Can you use the "thread tools" at the top of this thread since you were the thread creator and start a poll on this topic?

I think it would be I interesting to see which style of recruiting most people prefer and if many would pick Tress' philosophy...

Ask me again in a few years. Tressel clearly had issues managing some of his stars, so maybe it was best that he specialized at finding under-valued talent.

Its nice to load up on Ohio kids and it makes you feel good, but what makes you feel better is loading up on top end talent across the country if you have ability to bring them in. College football is beautiful because in essence you get 5-7 first round draft picks every year if you're a great recruiter.

With Urban around, that number would be an average.. we may see a few years where we put around 8 or 9 in the first and another 10 - 12 in the 2nd and third

Step aside NCAA... Fear the Silver Bullets... NCAA '13-'??? should be renamed Urban Combat... If you thought we dominated College Football in the 50s and 60s under Woody... just wait and see the next decade!

    Stomp the brakes son!

20 players drafted in the first 2-3 rounds in 1 Draft?

Maybe in 2 drafts at the very peak of Meyer's Reign....

If we have a draft where 10-12 players get drafted, with 4-5 in the 1st round, that alone would be elite and that's nowhere near your numbers..

We did have that draft about 5 or 6 years ago when we had 14 players taken. That may happen again, but it certainly won't be a yearly thing. The numbers are impossible.

    Yes, please stompeth thy brakes.

So you're saying that we'll make up 1/3 of the 1st round on a yearly basis? You sound like a ND fan with BCS aspirations...

And even if that was possible, that's not a good thing. There's no way a team can remain elite with that kind of turn over.

Haha crunching your numbers even further... You're saying that in 4 years, TOSU will put 80+ players into the 1st and 2nd rounds. Essentially, every player that graduates will be a stud.

    Not gonna happen.

I liked JT's no pressure approach early in the process and love Urban's full court press in the final month of the process.

The Neal and Diggs situation is the perfect example of the difference in philosophies......

JT would have most likely taken Neal and called it a day.........

Urban feels Diggs is by far the better player and better fit for his program and tells the #1 ranked athlete no thanks..........

Now, the reduction in scholies probably is the reason we cannot take both but the my point is that Urban will role the dice and be agressive.......

I missed about 4 hours on the board here, but I don't see why we can't take both?

    There will be room...

Is it the rookis WR coach's tweet?

We can make room for both, fact...
