    OHIO STATE OFFERS IN-STATE LB
Ohio State got a head start on the 2022 class, as in-state sophomore outside linebacker Gabe Powers announced on Thursday night that he now has an offer from Al Washington and the Buckeyes.

Powers, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound talent from Marysville High School that lies just a half-hour drive from Ohio State's campus, becomes just the second Ohio recruit offered by the Buckeyes in the 2022 class. This comes almost exactly two weeks after Washington offered Lakota West (Ohio) High School offensive lineman Tegra Tshabola. Powers is the 19th overall recruit to hold an offer in the sophomore class.

"Getting these offers at such a young age is very humbling and a blessing," Powers told Eleven Warriors. "(Ohio State) started to notice me after Michigan offered me and after coach Washington watched me play."

Washington made the quick trip over to Marysville two weeks ago to see Powers help lead his team to a 35-0 win over Central Crossing High School in the regular season finale. After seeing Powers, who made a recent visit to the Shoe for the Michigan State game, showcase athleticism and toughness to pair with the size he already possesses at this age, Washington elected to make Powers the latest gritty linebacker with an offer to his program.

"I have a lot of respect for coach Washington and all the Ohio State staff," Powers said. "They have treated me very good. He seems to be very respectful and a players' coach that everyone likes."

Gabe Powers excited by Ohio State offer
When he visited Ohio State early in October, Marysville 2022 linebacker Gabe Powers felt confident that if he kept handling his business on and off the field, eventually the program would extend him a scholarship offer.

It didn’t take long for that to happen.

Ohio State became the latest major program to offer the 6-foot-4, 220-pound sophomore. And despite having a few days to process it, he suggested it still feels a little surreal.

“I am beyond blessed,” Powers told Lettermen Row. “It was [Buckeyes linebackers coach Al] Washington who offered me. I wasn’t expecting it. I am still feeling very blessed to receive these great offers at such an early age.”

Florida State, Michigan and Colorado have already offered Powers, but there’s no doubt that the Ohio State offer will be a difficult one for the talented sophomore to turn down. He is, however, trying to be patient and not allow himself to get caught up in the emotions that are attached to an offer from a “dream school.”

“I’m going to just have to approach it as I have been,” Powers said. “I still am open to all colleges, and I’m going to go where I feel most comfortable and where I fit in the most.

“I don’t know where I’m going to go. I want to find the place that best fits me.”

Just being from a specific state isn’t enough of a recruiting pitch to land a super-talented player in the current era of college football. So if the Buckeyes want to prove their the right place for Powers, that will happen only by making sure they grow the relationship with him and his family from here.

POWERS NOT OPPOSED TO PLAYING DE
On Thursday night, 2022 stud outside linebacker Gabe Powers, of Marysville (Ohio) High School just a half hour from Ohio State’s campus, announced an offer from the Buckeyes.

Powers is exceedingly grateful for the early recognition from Al Washington and the Ohio State coaches, as he became just the second in-state sophomore to receive a scholarship offer from the biggest program in the state.

Powers told Eleven Warriors that the offer is “very humbling, and I’m blessed to receive an offer at such a young age. It’s been a dream of mine to always play at the highest level I can and to play college football.”

Now, the question will become where this talent will play college football – which position and which program?

At 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, Powers already has great size, and he has an elite frame to make him an even more dynamic prospect. It’s why the Buckeyes got in on him early with the offer.

At that size, it’s possible Powers could eventually develop into a defensive end prospect, and it’s something Washington and company have discussed with him.

“They’ve talked about defensive end,” Powers said. “It’s whatever the team wants me to do. I’ll do whatever the team wants me to do wherever I end up.”

There is a long, long way to go here, but where Powers ends up will be a talking point for a while. He also holds offers from Michigan and Colorado, and Notre Dame, Purdue, USC and Cincinnati are all in talks with the 2022 recruit who could end up a highly rated player on national boards.

But Powers will, of course, be taking his time in narrowing his options down over the next year or two.

“I wanna get to know as many colleges as I can,” Powers said. “I wanna see where I fit in and where I’m comfortable the most and who treats me the best and go from there – see which colleges I like and make a decision based off that.

Powers has visited Ohio State twice this season for games, including the Michigan State matchup on Oct. 5.

“It’s a really good relationship we have,” Powers said of his bonds with the Ohio State coaches. “I’ve been down to a couple games and talked to coach Washington in person. He’s really a good guy. It seems like all the players love him. He’s a respectable guy. Our relationship’s really good right now.”

Marysville was knocked out of the playoffs last weekend, so now it will be time for Powers to get into the weight room to work on developing physically and onto the field whenever he can so that he can better his speed and quickness.

“This offseason I just need to work on still getting bigger and faster, and I need to keep getting better at flying to the ball,” Powers said. “Towards the end of the year, I picked it up. It was slow, but as the year went on, I started to get a little hang of the game more.”

GABE POWERS, 6-FOOT-4, 220 POUNDS, OUTSIDE LINEBACKER
Powers is another sophomore who has tremendous length and athleticism at a very young age. Powers is also a local kid who hails from Marysville, just over 30 minutes from Ohio State. He also has a few offers from other Power-Five schools including Tennessee, Colorado, and Florida State.

At 6-foot-4, Powers has very good size at linebacker and has had conversations with Ohio State about potentially even playing defensive end. Powers received an early offer from Ohio State because of how hard it can be to find an athlete with his size. Linebackers coach Al Washington went to watch Powers live this past season and Powers has also visited Ohio State multiple times, so the Buckeyes are in a very good spot here.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Four-star linebacker Gabe Powers of Marysville High School, a 2022 target of Ohio State, entered the spring thinking he might be ready to commit in the coming months.

He planned to attend camps and take some unofficial visits that would allow him to validate the impressions he already has. According to the three crystal balls on his 247Sports profile, he seemed to be leaning in Ohio State’s favor.

Then the world shut down, and that plan went out the window along with any chance of committing in 2020.

“I was going around a bunch of colleges and visit try to make it before my junior season,” Powers told cleveland.com. “With everything going on right now, I just don’t know if I’ll be able to make a commitment till next summer.”

Powers’ plan is still to get on some campuses. The recruiting dead period — which is now extended through July 31 — has forced him to wait another 12 months.

The Buckeyes have landed Ohio’s top player in four of the last five recruiting classes with Clemson offensive tackle Jackson Carmen as the exception. That has been head coach Ryan Day’s plan. In 2020 that meant bringing in the state’s top two players. In 2021 it’s the top five and seven of the top 12. In 2022, the Buckeyes already hold commitments from offensive lineman Tegra Teshabola (No. 2) and linebacker C.J. Hicks (No. 3).

Powers is the No. 43 player and the No. 4 outside linebacker in the 247Sports player rankings for 2022. It potentially means another talented young linebacker for the Buckeyes.

Powers stated that he’s been on multiple Zoom calls with linebackers coach Al Washington and that he can see himself playing any of the three spots in OSU’s defensive scheme. As an Ohio native living 32 minutes away from the Ohio State, he’s been on the Buckeyes campus enough times to have an idea of what it’s like.

    POWERS STILL WAITING FOR VISITS
As we continue to discuss the 2022 class, one of the Buckeyes’ main positions of need is linebackers, with three linebackers starting to look like the number they will be shooting for. Gabe Powers, while listed as a linebacker, is likely to grow into a defensive end. That's the position we’ve been told Ohio State sees him transitioning to if he plays in Columbus. (Just to rehash, Powers has been adamant about being more than willing to make the switch in the past)

In May, Powers had talked about possibly waiting another year to make a decision due to the uncertainty surrounding the dead period and inability to take visits.

There’s no major update here, but he has told us that his recruitment is going well right now and that he and his family are essentially waiting things out until things open back up and he can get out to make more visits. As of right now, Powers’ decision timeline runs parallel to when the dead period is lifted and visits are allowed.

Even though it may seem like a foregone conclusion that the in-state Marysville star will end up with the Buckeyes (and it’s a unanimous belief among myself and every analyst who covers Ohio State recruiting that that will be the case), it’s not set in stone yet. Don’t expect a decision to be made until visits are allowed again and Powers has explored all of his options.

That could change, of course, but Powers is a patient, strong-headed type of person, and he and his family are being very thorough in the process. This is a decision that’s only going to be made one time for a guy like Powers, whose commitment will be a lock whenever he makes it and wherever he chooses.

“Wherever I commit is where I will stay,” Powers said.
