Ohio State extends opportunity for kicker Jake Seibert
We introduced Jake Seibert, one of the country’s premier 2020 kicker prospects, back in the middle of last season.

“I’m just hoping [Ohio State’s need for a kicker] lines up,” Seibert told Lettermen Row in November. “And that they think I’ll be able to help them out in the future.

“I love the Buckeyes. It’s been my dream school forever. My uncle lives up in Columbus, so he kind of got me started with them.”

Now Seibert, the country’s top-ranked kicker according to ChrisSailerKicking.com, has his chance to finish with Ohio State. Kind of.

A Cincinnati La Salle product, Seibert has picked up an offer from Ohio State — a grayshirt offer. Now he’ll have to sit and decide whether or not his lifelong dream, which would require him to delay going on scholarship in Columbus, is worth passing up an additional semester of paid college at places like Michigan State, UCLA or others.

“I’ve got a really tough decision to make,” Seibert told Lettermen Row. “I’m going to reach out to [Ohio State punter] Drue Chrisman and talk to him about grayshirting, because I know he did that too. That way I can get more of a feel for how that all works.”

Expect Seibert to visit Ohio State in the next few weeks to get a closer look at what life with the Buckeyes would be like before making any sort of decision.

Jake Seibert Named to Chris Sailer TOP 12 Again
Ohio State kicker commit Jake Seibert made his way out to Los Angeles late last week to compete in his second Chris Sailer TOP 12 Kicking Camp in two years, and he returned to Cincinnati having been named to that top-12 again.

Eleven Warriors detailed his path toward a college commitment in the last year with an article written this morning, and in that article, Seibert told me that he was one of 45 kickers and punters to compete in 2018 and was one of few 2020 recruits, yet he was still named to the top-12. This second honor seemed inevitable.

“I’m hoping to be better than Mike Nugent was,” Seibert told Eleven Warriors. “I want to be the best kicker to ever come through Ohio State.”

It’s important to understand that this quote is not a reflection of arrogance, but rather of confidence needed in a placekicker. The full story can be found in the article, and these were some topics discussed.

    • Seibert’s relationship with Taver Johnson ending
    • Seibert relationship with Matt Barnes beginning
    • Seibert’s relationship with Drue Chrisman
    • Seibert’s grayshirt situation and how he views it
    • The path Seibert took toward becoming the No. 2 kicker in the country
    • Seibert working with former Cincinnati kicker Andrew Gantz

    Jake Seibert
At La Salle, Jake Seibert hit all six of his field goal attempts. La Salle has a pretty decent offense, so his coaching staff is less likely to pull the trigger on field goals near the endzone. The understanding that the best kicker in the country is on the roster might earn Seibert a few more opportunities during his senior year. The longest field goal he’s ever hit in a game is from 47 yards out, so he could also look to break 50 in 2019.

First Game: vs. Lakota West, Aug 30

Game to Watch: any of vs. Mansfield (Sept. 13), at Archbishop Moeller (Oct. 4), at St. Xavier (Oct. 18), vs. Winton Woods (Oct. 25), vs. Elder (Nov. 1)

Those are all games that a coaching staff would take a risk with his kicker in. The scores will likely be fairly close, so any points are significant. Seibert might even have a chance at a game-winning kick.
