Ryan Day on the importance of recruiting elite quarterbacks in every class:

"At Ohio State, if you come to be a quarterback, you’re the shortstop of the New York Yankees.”

Ryan Day's weekly radio show is underway.

Day said the Buckeyes talked a lot going into the Penn State game about getting out to a fast start and being physical at the line of scrimmage, and they accomplished that, so that's encouraging.

Ryan Day said the Big Ten is working on ensuring that gameday PCR tests for COVID-19 are available to all teams across the conference. Once that happens, players who test positive on a rapid-response test on gameday could be cleared to play if they get a negative PCR test.

Ryan Day says Ohio State will do its gameday COVID-19 testing between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. before Saturday's 7:30 p.m. home game. Buckeyes will be at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center on Saturday morning, then go back to the team hotel for awhile since it's a night game.

Ryan Day on Justin Fields and Chris Olave's work this offseason: “I saw two guys that were really hungry. I know the way last season ended really bothered both of them.”

Per Ryan Day, the Big Ten is trying to figure out how to better deal with false positives on game day. They need to make sure the PCR tests are available for everyone in the conference at the moment of need. They may have a solution in place for that by the end of the week.

Day says he recognized Justin Fields' potential to be special very early. But he's not there yet. He says they're striving to be a better practice team, and says that the fact that no one practiced on Tuesday might have helped play into a crazy day across the country today.

    • “It is a tale of two halves. Really proud of the way our guys came out and played.” Says they “didn’t play very great” in the second half. Notes special teams and penalties as areas of concern in the game.
    • “We should have really dominated in the first five or six minutes of the second half.” That didn't happen, so the backups never entered.
    • Day says without any juice in the stadium, this team has to “bring our own energy” better in the second half of blowouts. “We’ll focus on that this week.”
    • “I thought in the first half, it was pretty good. I thought we were tackling well and running to the ball.” Notes there were some missed tackles in the second half.
    • When he knew Fields would be a generational talent: “Pretty early on. I knew he had the potential to be.”
    • “Just disappointed about the second half.”
    • Says about the last throw to Olave, “(Fields) made it look like a 12-yard out.”
    • If he’s ever seen this many trick plays: “No. Especially the onside kicks. It was like a New York sidewalk. They were going back and forth, back and forth.”
    • He says they knew Greg Schiano would be aggressive. “We didn’t quite know it was going to be all of those things.”
    • “We’re not making excuses at all.” Says they need to clean up the penalties and other errors.
    • On defending the trick plays: “I thought we did a great job.” Says he felt his team was prepared for what happened. “We can’t always be worried about that. We need to be aggressive.” He points to the fake punt that Ohio State successfully employed.
    • Day says he wants to go back to the film and figure out what happened. “I think if we practice better, we’ll finish better.”
    • “It’s a strange season. It was a strange week. There’s so many things at play.” Says they’re going to do what they can to stay healthy and go beat Maryland.

A quick recap of what Day had to say in his first interview of the week:

    • Day on Justin Fields' impact on Ohio State's early success this season: “He's a big part of it, for sure.” He said the Buckeyes have put an emphasis on starting games fast, and he's pleased with the way they've been able to do that in the last game.
    • On the Buckeyes' success throwing the deep ball this year: “Justin has a strong arm, it allows us to take advantage.”
    • On the fake punt, Day said Ohio State knew Rutgers was going to do everything it could to try to gain an advantage, so the Buckeyes wanted to be aggressive. “It's one thing to say it, it's another thing to do it when you're in the moment. So you kind of hold your breath, but those guys were holding me to it, and it worked out.”
    • Day said Josh Proctor, Marcus Hooker, Jameson Williams and Xavier Johnson “gave extraordinary effort” to get Rutgers' opening kickoff down at the 35-yard line after the Scarlet Knights ran a trick play and threw the ball across the field.
    • Other than the punt return that went back for a touchdown, Day believes Ohio State responded well to Rutgers' special teams trick plays, but that film gives the Buckeyes “a lot to learn from.”
    • On the lackluster second-half performance against Rutgers: “We've got to do a better job of bringing energy, up 35-3 ... We've got to do a better job, and we will.”
    • Day said Maryland is playing “with a lot of confidence.” He's impressed by Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and his receivers, and said the Terrapins' defense “really did a great job last week against Penn State, played a lot of man coverage, disrupted their pass game.”
    • “They've upgraded their talent, and they're playing with a lot of confidence, and so we've got a challenge ahead of us. We've got to go into their place and play well, play four quarters.”
    • Day said he recruited Taulia Tagovailoa before he went to Alabama. “I got to know he and the family. Great football people, really good family. You knew he was going to be a really good player, and happy for him that he's doing well.”
