i wonder if we try to go fast tempo on them. i am sure they are going to slow it down and try to control the clock. our front 7 will be tested this week!

I don’t think we will have any problems slowing down their run game. This is a game that we might actually see Curtis Grant play well. He is built to play these types of offenses. Wouldn’t be surprised if he led the team in tackles.

We should wear their defense down with our tempo. I think this game will probably be different than our first four where we will probably not score so quick but score most of our points in the second half.

    My prediction is:

    Ohio State - 41
    Wisconsin - 20

Not even the beauty that is the University of Wisconsin football team’s running game can hide the warts that are on display at times when the Badgers decide to throw the ball.

Those flaws didn’t prevent UW from coasting to a 41-10 victory over Purdue in a Big Ten Conference game Saturday afternoon at Camp Randall Stadium, but even the Badgers admit an unbalanced offensive attack is only going to take them so far.

UW coach Gary Andersen put it this way after his team rushed for 388 yards against the Boilermakers but wasted some opportunities through the air: “We need to throw the ball and catch the ball better, without a doubt.”

Sophomore quarterback Joel Stave produced another uneven performance in his 10th career start, but the blame shouldn’t fall entirely on him.

An interception in the second quarter may have looked like Stave’s fault, but senior tight end Brian Wozniak took the fall for the turnover that Purdue converted into a field goal to cut UW’s lead to 14-10.

Stave thought Wozniak was going to cut his route inside based on Purdue’s coverage, but Wozniak instead went outside. The pass sailed behind Wozniak and right into the hands of Boilermakers cornerback Ricardo Allen, whose 27-yard return set up Purdue at the UW 10.

“That’s completely on me,” Wozniak said. “Joel and I talked about it on the sideline. He and I saw a different reads, and his read was correct. It was a good ball; it was a good idea. If I had that one back, I would. I told him just to keep trust in me.”

Still, Stave had a couple passes he wanted back as well.

One was his first throw of the game, when he overthrew senior wide receiver Jared Abbrederis on a corner route on third-and-5. UW went on to convert a season-low 38.5 percent of its third downs, with Stave completing 3 of 6 of his passes for 20 yards in those situations.

“That’s just something that I thought I could have hung on to it just a second longer and see where he sets his angle,” Stave said. “If I have a chance to do that, I think it’s much easier to complete that ball instead of just throwing it out there blindly.”

Another came midway through the third quarter, when Stave threw way behind freshman wideout Rob Wheelwright on a slant route.

“I thought he threw the ball sideways real good, as far as the bubble screens and the underneath passes. The out-breaking routes, I thought he handled them very, very well,” Andersen said. “It seems to be the in-breaking routes right now that is an issue, just in a nutshell.”

Later in the third quarter, Stave had Abbrederis wide open downfield but missed him badly. It was the opening play of the series, and Stave blamed himself for not being ready to throw a deep pass.

“I’ve just got to do a better job of staying loose on the sidelines,” Stave said. “I sat there for about 10 minutes, and I can’t expect myself to come in and try and throw a 65-yard bomb if I’m not even a little bit warm. It was cooler than I guess I realized out there and I’ve just got to make sure I’m staying loose, staying ready for whatever’s called.”

The Badgers (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) will need a much better performance in the passing game next week at No. 4 Ohio State (4-0, 0-0), but Andersen is confident Stave will deliver.
“No one cares more about throwing the ball good than Joel, I promise you,” Andersen said. “He’ll continue to work on that. He is making some very nice throws at times. We’re missing on a few, but they’re not necessarily layups. It’s not that easy to just go out there and throw the ball 60 yards down the field and have it get caught.”

    Thanks Arap....

    I agree Luda...

    We will cover that...

The line will probably rise to double digits by kickoff Saturday due to so many people betting on OSU to cover, and it will go up when Braxton is named starter on Thursday....

I honestly think this could be our toughest test this season, but I still think we win by 14, maybe more cause Urbans showed he's not scared to go for it on fourth

There is no other team I'd rather start the conference season off with.

I think we'll get a good idea of how deep our d-line really is. Especially if Meyer and Herman elect to stay up-tempo.

If we get out to the 1st quarter start like we have been, teams like Wisconsin and Michigan have no shot. Christian Bryant and Roby will have INT opportunities for three quarters.

I hope Dolph is back and moves inside so Bosa can continue to start. Both of those guys can play the run and rush the passer equally as well. IMO, this will be the only game of the year that we will really miss Schutt. We’ll still be fine though.

i agree! i think the combination of strength and speed our defense has we can do a good job slowing down their offense.
