This would be massive for recruiting. Would he be good on scheme though?

I think so. He knows both man and zone schemes and ran them well for the Titans! His first year they were 6th in the NFL in pass defense. Now, this year they took big decline to #25, but Malcolm Butler being on IR and Adoree Jackson being banged up doesn’t help that. Plus their pass rush has been out with injuries, including Cameron Wake on IR.

If I had to pick between him and Gannon from the Colts, I’d take Coombs. We know he can coach and he’d instantly be the second best recruiter on the team behind Hartline. Imo, it’s a no-brainer. Besides, if Vrabel misses the playoffs this year, he might be unemployed and his staff could be looking. Although, it’s looking like they’ll get a wild card spot.

Ohio State needs to finalize defensive coaching hire
This column is about what the Buckeyes need to do on the recruiting trail, but that begins in the coaching offices of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Ryan Day needs to replace Jeff Hafley, and he needs to do it as soon as he possibly can.

That sounds simple. But in football, nothing ever is. There are extenuating circumstances — namely the NFL playoffs — that appear to be forcing Day and Ohio State to be delayed in getting a final answer from Tennessee Titans assistant coach Kerry Coombs. If there’s a realistic candidate beyond the former Buckeyes co-coordinator, he’s not yet made his way into the conversation. And that sure leads to the idea that Coombs is and always has been Day’s top choice.

If the choice is Coombs as expected, the sooner Ohio State can officially announces it, the better.

Ohio State, Kerry Coombs remain in holding pattern
Ohio State coach Ryan Day met with media members on Wednesday and dished on a number of topics pertinent to his program. If interested, that video can be found here and is enlightening on a number of levels.

One thing Day was asked about was the status of Jeff Hafley’s replacement, and as expected, he didn’t say much about where things stand — especially when asked about Kerry Coombs specifically. Day actually bristled a little bit at the assumption that the hiring of Coombs was all but official.

“No, we haven’t hired anyone yet,” Day said. “Still going through it all. Just go from there. I’m not going to go through that right now.”

While it is Lettermen Row’s expectations that Coombs will ultimately replace Hafley, work remains to be done in order for the move to be finished. In sports, especially in college football coaching searches, things can and usually do change very quickly.

Day’s reluctance to dive into the status of Ohio State’s pursuit of Coombs is expected and smart.
