    Another Buckeye Offer
Three-star Michigan athlete Cameron Martinez became the sixth Ohio State offer of the week Friday afternoon. The Muskegon High School quarterback has posted 2,316 rushing yards and 632 passing yards for 47 total touchdowns with just his senior year remaining.

Most programs have recruited the No. 18 Michigan recruit as a running back, wide receiver and defensive back. He's the seventh athlete offered by Ohio State in his class and has the sixth-best 247Sports composite rating.

Martinez has more than 20 offers, including offers from programs like Michigan and Michigan State, which are both near the top of his interest list. Indiana, Purdue and Penn State have also offered.

He’s a prospect similar to Dublin’s Michael Drennen II and Fairfield’s Jutahn McClain, and it’ll be interesting to see how Ohio State handles the recruitment of all three. Each one of the potential H-backs have now earned Buckeye offers and the Wolverines are heavily involved with the trio as well.

Cameron Martinez lands long-awaited Ohio State offer
After a year of back-and-forth relationship building affected by coaching changes and school changes, Muskegon (Mich.) 2020 athlete Cameron Martinez was offered by Ohio State on Friday.

Martinez is 5-foot-11 and 175-pounds and has been talking to the Buckeyes for a while now, but that communication started with Kerry Coombs, then turned into Taver Johnson and now he’s hearing from receivers coach Brian Hartline and secondary assistant Matt Barnes.

“I’ve been talking to Matt Barnes quite often,” Martinez said before he learned of the offer. “He’s a really cool dude and a good recruiter. He sent me the spring practice schedule, so I was gonna go in April. But he texted me [last Thursday] saying I needed to get up there ASAP. So, I’m going try to go sooner.”

The Buckeyes helped make that trip more necessary by offering on Friday afternoon. That decision came after a group of Ohio State coaches sat down one more time to review Martinez’s game tape.

“I called Coach Barnes today and he said they watched my defense film — the whole defensive staff did. He said they really fell in love with it,” Martinez told Lettermen Row. “Now the next step is they want to get me and my family up there and build a relationship with the other coaches. They still like me a lot for offense too, and being a return guy as well.”

Martinez is a Michigan native but has grown up dreaming of an Ohio State offer thanks in part to his older brother.

“My older brother, Christian, loved Ohio State growing up, so when he watched them I was watching them with him,” he said. “We went to the football camps there as little kids and I loved going up there for those.

“I started to love watching Ohio State play on Saturdays when Christian would watch them, and it’s always been a dream to have an offer from Ohio State. Now it’s a dream come true.”

The Buckeyes offer is the 21st for Martinez, but the program will be a major player in his recruitment if they choose to recruit him aggressively. His final decision isn’t coming anytime soon, but three Big Ten schools are going to be involved until the end.

“Despite having offers from Ohio State and Michigan, I really love Northwestern,” he said. “And I’m going to make it up to some other schools this spring, but those two will definitely be up.

“It’s all about a place that feels like home and the relationships I have with the coaches, and how much in love I fall in with one school. I’ve got a great relationship with Northwestern.”

Keep an eye on this one moving forward.

    Cameron Martinez • Muskegon, Michigan • 5-foot-11, 175 pounds • ★★★ • Nat Rank: No. 421

Michigan's Cameron Martinez may actually be the most intriguing option of the bunch, and the Muskegon athlete has a bit of a Jalin Marshall feel to his game. Unlike Drennen and McClain, the 5-foot-11, 175-pounder lines up at quarterback in his team's option offense. Ohio State offered just a few weeks back and the staff is looking at him as both a playmaker and a defensive back.

A three-star prospect and the No. 11 player in Michigan, Martinez captured the state's Player of the Year honors for the 2018 season. As a junior – his first season as Muskegon's starter – he ran for over 2,500 yards and 38 touchdowns. Ohio State and Michigan are both very much in the picture, but it may be Northwestern at the top of his list. He's made multiple visits to Evanston and the educational component is a big factor in this one.

Cameron Martinez makes first visit to Ohio State in two years
Over the course of the last two months, the Buckeyes have made few players more of a priority than Muskegon (Mich.) two-way athlete Cameron Martinez. After making his first visit to the school in two years, Martinez seems very comfortable with where he and Ohio State stand.

“We had a blast,” Martinez told Lettermen Row. “The coaches, the facilities, everything really. I have a good feeling about Ohio State.

    “It was just mindblowing.”

Martinez is being recruited by the Buckeyes as an athlete. And because of that, he spent time with a number of different coaches during his visit.

“I had one-on-one time with [defensive coordinator] Jeff Hafley, [receivers coach Brian] Hartline and Ryan Day,” he said. “They said that really it’s up to me on what position I want to play, but they love me on both sides, wide receiver or safety. Coach Hafley wants to move me around on defense, and Coach Hartline wants me at the H-spot like K.J. Hill.”

The Buckeyes impressed Martinez, his mother and his stepfather with their commitment to detail. The family arrived in Columbus around 9 a.m. and spent roughly seven hours on campus, getting a whirlwind tour of everything Ohio State has to offer.

“They really liked Ryan Day, and I did too,” Martinez said. “We had good conversations. The Real Life Wednesday stuff was great, so was the ‘Brand U’ stuff that they have, they did a presentation like what they had for Chase Young.”

Next week, Martinez is making a number of college visits as he looks to narrow down his choices. Ohio State, Michigan and Northwestern are among the favorites, but no program is out of the recruitment yet.

“I’m just going to see these other schools next week and then I can go from there,” Martinez said. “I’m checking out Northwestern, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Iowa state, Purdue and Indiana.”

    Cameron Martinez Can Play Receiver
Michigan athlete Cameron Martinez, who is very high on the Buckeyes, said he “took offense” to not getting the wide receiver MVP award because he felt confident in the way he performed at a position some evaluators slight him for.

“Playing quarterback the whole year, people haven’t really seen me play receiver,” Martinez said. “But I came in here playing the best of the best and dominating. I think that surprised a lot of people. I was telling people I feel a little disrespected sometimes, so just coming out here and showing what I can do is great.”

Martinez pays quarterback at Muskegon High School in Michigan, and, as a result, he doesn't play the other offensive skill positions, though Ohio State sees him as a potential H-back prospect – similar to current Ohio State receiver K.J. Hill, he said.

Regardless of the perception, Martinez performed well in the one-on-one drills, including burning one cornerback on a deep route and making a circus catch on his second repetition. Besides four-star Massillon wideout Jayden Ballard and Carr, Martinez made the biggest waves in wide receiver vs. defensive back one-on-ones.

Ohio State prioritizes Michigan athlete Cameron Martinez
Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley was in Western Michigan on Monday in the small town of Muskegon, where he saw 3-star athlete Cameron Martinez. Hafley spent a couple of hours at Muskegon High School, time spent with a handful of folks close to the talented multisport star.

“He was there for a while,” Martinez told Lettermen Row. “Everybody that met him today loved him. He talked to all my coaches and caught up with my stepdad again. He watched me lift and run track at practice as well.”

Hafley wants Martinez to play in the secondary for the Buckeyes. But his visit came just a day after Martinez had an extended conversation with receivers coach Brian Hartline about Ohio State’s NFL Draft weekend, highlighting program’s success putting receivers in the league. Hartline wants Martinez, who plays more on the offensive side of the ball in high school, catching passes as part of Zone 6 if he picks the Buckeyes over an expanding list of school choices.

That conversation with Hartline followed a series of talks with Ryan Day last week that were centered on continuing to grow his overall comfort with the Buckeyes and setting up his official visit, which is likely to be set for the weekend of June 21.

The point? Ohio State is all in on Cameron Martinez. Clearly it wants the 5-foot-11, 175-pound prospect to know it. Martinez is a priority target for the Buckeyes, and it doesn’t matter what position he suits up for in Columbus — the desire to add him to the Class of 2020 is high.

Though his official visit isn’t yet set in stone, Martinez knows he will visit a couple of schools in May before what’s likely to be a busy June on the official visit front.

“Penn State is the last weekend of May,” Martinez said. “And Kentucky may be in the middle of May. I’ll probably visit Louisville when I go to Kentucky as well.”
