Starting off in-state, the Buckeyes sent out a new offer to 2023 prospect Jermaine Mathews (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods). A 6-foot, 175 pound athlete, Mathews is no new name to the Ohio State coaches, but is someone that they very much wanted to see perform at camp, and he did that and more on Wednesday putting on quite the performance. So impressive, Mathews was clocked at a sub 4.4 40-yard dash time, and anytime you see those numbers from a high school athlete hand-timed or not, it’s telling.

The No. 551 player nationally per the 247Sports Composite grades, Mathews is also the 15th best player in Ohio in the current cycle. Not as highly ranked as Ohio State targets typically are, it’s worth noting that he has over 30 offers to his name, and the Buckeyes being the latest in the mix certainly bodes well for more top programs taking notice.

Any time Ohio State offers an in-state player, it’s not a surprise to expect the Buckeyes to be the favorite, but Mathews being a Winton Woods product too may even further help Ohio State’s case in landing the talented cornerback. Having multiple guys on the current roster also from Winton Woods thanks to Miyan Williams and Jerron Cage, Ohio State should be in a good spot moving forward as they continue to pursue defensive backs in the class.

    Buckeyes trending for Mathews?
It was just one week ago in which Ohio State welcomed 2023 four-star athlete Jermaine Mathews of Winston Woods (OH) to Columbus to give him the opportunity to impress the Buckeyes defensive coaching staff. Of course, the Cincinnati native did just that, as the performance at the camp allowed for Mathews to depart with an offer from the Buckeyes.

Fast forward to Tuesday, and highly-respected recruiting analyst Steve Wiltfong felt strongly enough to cast a Crystal Ball prediction in favor of the scarlet and gray to land the 6-foot, 180-pounder. While the relationship is still fresh for both parties, the vote of confidence from Wiltfong certainly rings loud as Mathews gets closer and closer to having to make his decision.

Mathews is currently graded as the No. 8 best prospect from the state of Ohio. The Warriors defensive back also holds offers from Cincinnati, Boston College, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Washington, and many more.

In-state 2023 athlete schedules OSU official
It really is official visit season, and like the aforementioned Novosad, another recent Buckeye offer will be soon be on campus for an official visit. In-state 2023 athlete, Jermaine Mathews, was electric in his camp performance at Ohio State earlier this month. Locking receivers up all day, the 6-foot cornerback out of Cincinnati earned his offer by showing the coaching staff just what he’s made of and why he’s worth the attention.

Fast forward not even two weeks, and Mathews has set his official visit date for next weekend, June 17, and staying in town through Sunday on a multiple-day stay. Mathews is considered as the 28th-best athlete in the country and the eighth-best player in Ohio in the 2023 class. Having nearly 40 offers to his name, this is a player that could definitely see his ranking rise, and especially after his Ohio State offer was received.

Any time an in-state player gets the Buckeyes in the fold you have to like their chances, and in this case Ohio State does seem to stand in a favorable position, but the official visit should really bring to light how both parties are feeling. In this regard, an official visit this soon after an offer obviously shows how interested Mathews is in Ohio State.

One week after picking up an Ohio State offer, Ohio 2023 cornerback Jermaine Mathews has locked in an official visit to Columbus.

Mathews told Eleven Warriors Tuesday he’ll make a return trip to OSU on June 17, the same weekend high-priority targets Brandon Inniss, Noah Rogers, Jayden Bonsu and others are expected to be on campus.

The 6-foot, 175-pound Mathews dazzled the Buckeyes with an impressive camp performance on June 1, bolstered by a small cheering section of Ohio State players in one-on-one drills. Ohio State coaches aren’t the only people Mathews has impressed since, as he is now a four-star recruit rather than a three-star recruit in 247Sports’ composite rankings.

Upon receiving his OSU offer, the Winton Woods standout was ecstatic because he had grown up rooting for the Buckeyes.

“It felt really good,” Mathews told Eleven Warriors after receiving his offer. “It’s really hard to explain because it’s something you’ve been waiting on for so long. And then when it happened, it’s just like, wow. (Day) said I earned it.”

His recruitment will likely move fast, although he’s cautioned his original commitment date of July 4 may be pushed back. Mathews has already started taking official visits, making a trip to Cincinnati last weekend. Kentucky, Pittsburgh, recent offer Oklahoma and a few others are in contention for his commitment, but securing an official visit puts Ohio State in a good position to land the Cincinnati product.
