That’s not necessarily the case, even with Tuesday night’s offer to North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton. “I’m blessed to announce that I have received an offer from the Ohio State University,” Hampton posted on social media. “Thank you to Coach Tony Alford.” Hampton is the country’s No. 11-ranked running back and has 21 offers now. He hails from Cleveland (Clayton, N.C.). High School, and Ohio State joins Florida, LSU, Michigan, Penn State, Tennessee and others on the offer list. At 6-foot, 215 pounds, he’s the kind of big, bruising running back that thrives in the Big Ten — and that’s why the offer from Alford and the Buckeyes came now. It means nothing at all in the efforts to land top targets like Hayden and Singleton. What it could mean, however, is that there’s more of a chance than ever that Ohio State could opt for two tailbacks in the Class of 2022. Right now, the Buckeyes are right near the top of the list for Hayden and Singleton, along with Damari Alston and others. There’s been no drop off with any of those targets. Ohio State remains very interested in them, and vice versa. Being in a good position with top targets is kind of Tony Alford’s thing, though. He’s been as good as any coach on the Buckeyes staff over the last few cycles, but there’s no doubt that what happened in 2020 shaped how he’s approached things since. He will not be caught flat-footed or without other options on deck if a young player surprises him and Ohio State with a flip-flopping mindset. Omarion Hampton was offered by the Buckeyes because he’s a really good player. Don’t read into it beyond that.
