Walking out of the southeast tunnel leading to Ohio Stadium on Saturday, Bennett Christian couldn’t help but flash a smile.

The 2022 four-star tight end prospect has been committed to the Buckeyes for almost a year, but last weekend was his first opportunity to see an Ohio State game in person. Fully soaking in the environment he’ll experience for his collegiate career, the Georgia resident wasn’t disappointed. Especially since the Buckeyes delivered a dominating 66-17 victory over Maryland.

“It was great,” Christian told Eleven Warriors Monday night. “Finally my first OSU game, definitely lived up to the expectations and it was a great atmosphere. Ohio State played really well, so it was fun to watch … To be honest, it was almost exactly like I expected it to be. Just from watching TV and videos. The O-H and then I-O chant around the stadium was really cool. That was probably the highlight of the whole stadium as far as atmosphere goes.”

Christian spent a lot of the visit with fellow 2022 commits C.J. Hicks and Tegra Tshabola.

“It was good, I haven’t seen those guys since my official visit back in June,” Christian said. “It was good seeing them and continuing to build the relationship with those guys and strengthen the brotherhood.”

Christian also spent time with Ryan Day, OSU tight ends coach Kevin Wilson and assistant athletic director for player personnel Mark Pantoni on the visit. Along with his father, Christian got to watch Wilson break down some of the game film from Maryland on Sunday morning.

“I probably talk to at least one of the coaches almost every day,” Christian said. “Even if it’s just a quick text to the coaches. I’ll probably talk to coach Wilson three times a week, maybe on the phone.”

Christian, who caught 20 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns for Allatoona (Atworth, Georgia) in his junior season, is still waiting to see how he’ll be deployed by the Buckeyes next year.

“I guess I’ll find out when I get there, I’m not really sure how I’ll be used,” Christian said. “I really like how they split the tight ends out and bring them in and everything in-between. The really complete players are able to catch and block. So I’m just ready to get developed and see where I fit in.”

For the most part, his recruitment was drama-free.

That’s mostly because Bennett Christian, Ohio State’s lone 2022 tight end signee, committed early in the recruiting process, picking OSU over Tennessee on Sep. 1, 2020. It was a big recruiting win for the Buckeyes considering Christian’s Southern roots, as the three-star prospect resides in Georgia.

Both because of his recruiting ranking and straightforward recruitment, Christian may be less heralded in the eyes of OSU fans in comparison to some of the other 17 signees in the 2022 class thus far. His stats over the last two seasons didn’t jump off the page either, as Christian only played in four games for Allatoona High School (Acworth, Georgia) in 2022, catching five passes for 76 yards. He caught 20 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns as a junior.

Nevertheless, Ryan Day is very confident in Christian’s skill set.

“He’s well-rounded in a lot of areas,” Day said on Dec. 15. “As a person and as a football player, he’s strong. He can do a really good job at the line of scrimmage blocking the seven technique but he also can run routes and get down the field. He’s got good versatility that way.”

Physically, Day said Christian is a step ahead of where tight ends normally are entering their freshman season, as he currently boasts a 6-foot-6, 235-pound frame.

"I think some tight ends are developmental physically, and I’m not sure (if he is),” Day said. “I mean he’s got to change his body a little bit, but for the most part, this is a big, good-looking tight end. A lot of guys come in undersized like 215 or 220 and you have to really grow them into the position. He’s already kind of there. He’s going to have to put on some more weight as he goes, but now it’s just going to be about learning our offense and learning the techniques with coach (Kevin) Wilson.”

Adjusting to a college system may not be too difficult for Christian given his mental fortitude, according to Day.

“I think he’s going to assimilate quick,” Day said. “He’s very intelligent and has been a very solid part of our class for a while.”

Entering his freshman year, some thought the four-star Georgia prospect might have more of a chance to make an immediate impact due to the uncertainty in the position room. The depth chart at tight end quickly became stabilized as Cade Stover emerged as a legitimate pass-catching weapon early in the year, though, and Christian wound up playing just nine snaps offensive snaps for the year – and all in the same game. Christian saw special teams reps against Toledo and Michigan State, but that was the extent of his in-game action in 2022.

    2023 OUTLOOK
With Stover returning next season and Gee Scott Jr., Joe Royer and Sam Hart all holding more experience in the program, Christian still faces an uphill battle for more opportunities as a second-year Buckeye. Not to mention, four-star top-100 2023 recruit Jelani Thurman will also be in the mix among Ohio State’s reserve tight ends next season.
