Lorenzo Styles trying to make big decision about future
Another of the country’s best junior receiver prospects with an offer is Buckeyes legacy and local standout Lorenzo Styles, Jr.

Styles, who plays offense and defense for Pickerington Central, is the highest-ranked player in Ohio who hasn’t already committed to the Buckeyes. The chance to get back on campus at Ohio State was something he wanted to do in order to hang out with his good friend Jack Sawyer and to once again grow the relationship between Brian Hartline and himself.

“It went well,” Styles told Lettermen Row. “I got to see a lot of my guys as well as reconnect with Coach Hartline.”

Despite some conversation about which side of the ball is best for Styles, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound athlete indicated the message from the Buckeyes hasn’t changed over the last year-plus since he received his offer.

“The message has always been the same,” he said. “Ohio State loves me, and they have a spot for me. They want me to just keep getting more familiar with the program and seeing why it would be a good fit.”

That fit is what it’s all about for Styles, who appears to be torn between childhood dreams and some adult decisions that are ahead of him.

“I really like the idea of the dream come true,” Styles said. “Playing college football with Jack, us accomplishing what we talked about as little kids.

“I’m just unsure if I want to stay home or create my college football experiences away somewhere.”

The next step for Styles is another visit to Notre Dame, and that comes this week when the Irish host USC for a night game in South Bend. Notre Dame is the primary opponent here for Ohio State, and though the talented athlete has discussed wanting to make visits to a couple of SEC schools, there’s a feeling that a decision is going to come sooner than later.

Styles set for Notre Dame visit
Lorenzo Styles Jr. was one of the many junior recruits in Ohio Stadium on Saturday, and it was no surprise to see who he walked in beside.

Styles and Jack Sawyer have been friends since they played each other in football as kids growing up in Ohio. The two crosstown high school rivals — Sawyer goes to Pickerington North, Styles is at Pickerington Central — have a tight bond, and that could end up being a deciding factor in whether or not Styles commits to the Buckeyes.

It’s a one-on-one race between Ohio State and Notre Dame for Styles’ commitment, and Styles will now be able to compare the two a bit more side-by-side, as he’s set for a second visit to South Bend this weekend for the Irish’s battle with USC.

Styles has also visited Auburn and Penn State, but it’s going to come down to the Buckeyes or the Irish. He has visited nearby Ohio State five times, and this will be his second Notre Dame visit.

The Styles brothers reunite in Columbus
A more immediate addition to the roster, Ohio State also earned a transfer over the weekend from former Notre Dame receiver-turned-corner Lorenzo Styles. Styles, of course, is the brother of current Buckeye safety Sonny Styles. The former Pickerington, Ohio native was originally recruited by Ohio State to play corner, but chose to play wide receiver for the Irish. Things have now come full-circle.

Styles was the No. 5 prospect in the state of Ohio in the 2021 class, and parlayed that into 54 receptions for 648 yards and two touchdowns as a receiver at Notre Dame. Ironically enough, his career-long catch came against Ohio State in last year’s season opener on a 54-yard catch-and-run. He had already begun the transition to the defensive backfield this spring in South Bend after playing the position in high school.

Styles probably won’t make an immediate impact on the roster, as the Buckeyes do have some top-end talent in their cornerback room led by Denzel Burke and Davison Igbinosun with Jordan Hancock and Jyaire Brown waiting in the wings. However, as we saw last season, you can never have too much depth at defensive back, and with two years of eligibility and a potential redshirt year remaining, we could see both Styles’ roaming the backfield in the future.
