Joe Royer quickly sets Ohio State official visit
Offered last Friday by Ohio State after a dominant one-day camp performance, Cincinnati Elder High School 2020 tight end Joe Royer has wasted no time getting an official visit set with the program.

“I am taking my official visit to Ohio State on the weekend of June 21,” Royer told Lettermen Row on Monday. “It is the first official visit I have set up as of now.”

For the Buckeyes, the big question is whether or not they can make next weekend’s visit Royer’s only official visit. Ohio State wants two tight ends in the Class of 2020, and Royer will make that visit alongside another top target at the position, Cam Large, from Dedham, Mass.

Last weekend Royer visited Michigan with another tight end, Matthew Hibner. The trip, which Royer said went “well,” ended with Hibner committed. The Wolverines and reportedly shutting down their tight end recruiting in 2020, so who knows what that means for their efforts in recruiting the 6-foot-5, 225-pound Ohio athlete.

So what happens now? Expect Royer to narrow his schools list soon as he works toward a college decision.

 

Joe Royer releases top-six

In case you missed the post this morning, Cincinnati tight end Joe Royer released his top-six Tuesday evening, and it included Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, LSU, Penn State and Arizona State.

Some quick hits from the post were as follows.

• Royer camped at Ohio State on Thursday, received his offer Friday, set up an official visit for June 21 over the weekend and released his top-six Tuesday.
• He made a visit to Michigan over the weekend, but Michigan simultaneously earned its second 2020 tight end commitment. None of the other five schools on his list have a tight end commitment yet.
• Royer will be visiting Ohio State the same day as tight ends Cam Large and Jalin Conyers.
• He has talked to Ohio State commit and Elder High School teammate Jakob James about the Buckeyes.

One thing I’ve noticed about fans’ reactions to Royer is that his ratings aren’t that impressive. When rating tight ends, it becomes difficult once the clear-cut top tight ends are already rated. It’s clear in high school which tight ends are physically and naturally on another level.

When looking at Royer’s ratings alone, 247Sports has him rated as the No. 17 tight end in the class, while the composite rating has him at No. 41. Once it gets down to a certain level, programs begin to look to find players that maximize talent with coachability, and Royer has both.

Of course, following the camp where Cincinnati tight end Joe Royer received an Ohio State offer, the ratings systems bumped his overall rating by about 50 percent. 247Sports Composite bumped him up 538 spots to No. 518 overall, which moves him into the No. 14 spot nationally for tight ends. 247Sports rates him at No. 200 overall and No. 3 at tight end.


Luke Lachey actually saw a jump in his ratings too. He’s now rated No. 434 overall by 247Sports Composite and No. 222 by 247Sports (No. 5 tight end).

What does this mean as far as how good Royer is? Well, he was criminally disregarded earlier in the process and should have been rated higher all along, but I would also be tentative on rating him as high as 247Sports did. Third is above tight ends like Theo Johnson, Maliq Carr, Lukas Ungar and Mark Redman, and I’m just not ready to make that type of a statement yet. He’s obviously good and, I thought, separated himself further than two spots away from Lachey on Monday, but third in the country is a bit too far at this point. I’d lean toward the composite rating of No. 14.

I get it though, he has quite a bit of upside. At 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, he moves well and is strong. His ball handling skills are underestimated, and he knows how to block. Adding weight would help him and shouldn’t be an issue if he does decide to go to Ohio State.

• The Buckeyes offered Royer three weeks ahead of his official visit, and the expectation for most was that he’d commit quickly to Ohio State. That thinking seemed to be supported by his quick decision to take an official in Columbus. I don’t think this one is a done deal by a long-shot, and believe Arizona State is a real threat to the Buckeyes here. Did Ohio State offer too late?

Could Ohio State be changing tune on 2020 tight end recruiting?
For months the Buckeyes have told potential targets at tight end that they expected to sign a pair of tight ends in the Class of 2020.

According to some people in the know, that could be changing. Ohio State may now be wanting to land only one tight end in this cycle, and the hope is that someone takes that spot in the very near future — with Cincinnati Elder tight end Joe Royer being at the top of the list,.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound Royer was only offered by the Buckeyes in earlier this month. But sources close to the Ohio State program have indicated for months that the primary delay in offering him was a desire to see him perform at camp in Columbus to evaluate his physical development and capabilities as an in-line tight end, because his skills as a receiver were obvious and known.

When Royer camped at Ohio State this month, he excelled and left no doubt that he was the right choice for the program. He also saw a radical ratings bump in the weeks that followed, with 247Sports.com now ranking him as the state of Ohio’s second-ranked player in the Class of 2020 behind only 5-star tackle Paris Johnson.

Royer made his official visit to Ohio State during the recent massive recruiting weekend and has not yet scheduled any other visits. But as Lettermen Row said on Monday, there has been some real speculation that Arizona State could prove to be an unexpected wrinkle.

The Buckeyes want Royer in their class, and there’s some speculation that this potential adjustment to the tight end number in 2020 could help tip the scales in their favor sooner than previously expected.
