Jaxson Smith-Njigba offered by Ohio State, sets visit

There may yet be more dividends for Ohio State to reap following its 40-28 win over TCU on Saturday in Dallas. We’ve already spoken about a handful of recruits that watched the Buckeyes play inside of AT&T Stadium, but on Monday night the first new offer to one of those stars in attendance went out to Rockwall (Texas) 2020 wide receiver Jaxson Smith-Njigba.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Smith-Njigba received the offer after conversation with the Buckeyes heated up on Sept. 1.

“For the past three weeks we’ve been in communication every day,” Smith-Njigba told Lettermen Row. “I’ve been in contact with [Buckeyes wide receivers coach] Brian Hartline and [Ohio State director of player personnel] Mark Pantoni.”

Texas’ 36th-ranked 2020 prospect called the Ohio State offense “explosive” after seeing Saturday’s game, and he’s set to see it again in person this season, having already set up his first unofficial visit to the school for early November.

“I’m going up there with my family,” he said. “I’ll be taking an unofficial on Nov. 2 to see more and learn about the school.”

What he knows to this point about Ohio State is what has him interested in learning more.

“Coach Hartline has been great,” Smith-Njigba said. “He’s been real with me from the jump. I’m familiar with how they develop players and get them to the next step, so I’m just trying to know more.”

Jaxon Smith-Njigba Shows Out in Dallas
Ohio State 2020 wide receiver commit Jaxon Smith-Njigba showed why the Buckeyes are excited to have the commitment of the No. 26 wide receiver in the class this weekend at The Opening Regionals in Dallas.

He posted the second-best wide receiver-tight end score of the regional showcase and will certainly be invited to the national round. He missed out on WR/TE MVP by less than a point behind Keller Central (TX) High School athlete and Oklahoma commit Davon Graham, who classifies as both a defensive back and a wideout.

He hit 4.60 seconds on his 40-yard dash and 37 inches on his vertical. He also measured in at 6-foot-1 and 194 pounds. His score of 119.67 tested in the 99th percentile of The Opening athletes tested in the first four weeks of the showcase this year.

Ohio State commit Jaxon Smith-Njigba has big day at The Opening
It’s combine season for the NFL, and it’s combine season for some of the country’s best high school football players as well. Top prospects from all over the country are lining up to take part in the regional camps for Nike, Under Armour, Rivals and Adidas as they hope to open eyes of college recruiters.

Buckeyes commit Jaxon Smith-Njigba doesn’t need to open more eyes. He knows where he’s heading for school, but he competed in Dallas at Nike’s camp because he wanted to see how he stacked up against the best of the best.

“I just went out there to compete,” the country’s 26th-ranked receiver told Lettermen Row. “To focus on getting good times. That was my second time running laser, and it was an improvement but I still got a long way to go, so I wouldn’t say I’m happy with it.

“I believe I could run faster.”

The 4-star prospect didn’t land an invitation to The Openings Finals — yet. But his combine score, good for fifth-best at the regional, showcases his elite and rare athleticism. He expects to get a call from the event’s coordinators and eventually land an invite to the prestigious event.

“They said I have a good chance [to be invited],” he said. “They are going to call me.”

Smith-Njigba will make his first visit to Ohio State since committing when he returns to Columbus for the spring game over the weekend of April 13.
