Jeff Hafley has Clark Phillips interested in Ohio State

Late last week, Ohio State offered California defensive back Clark Phillips III, the country’s sixth-ranked 2020 cornerback.

Phillips, a standout at La Habra High School, is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound prospect who has recently been in contact with new Buckeyes co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.

“Coach Hafley drove the process,” Phillips told Lettermen Row. “Coach Day flew in to make the offer. They are really down to earth and straight forward. Coach Hafley has been great.

“He’s real direct about why he is recruiting me. He is a straight shooter. We like that.”

The Buckeyes are just one of many schools that like Phillips. He lists 29 offers already and intended to release a top-10 schools list in the next few weeks — but the Ohio State opportunity changes things a bit for him.

“This shifts [my top 10] completely,” Phillips said. “The program and school and history with defensive backs and now Coach Hafley’s background is really interesting to me. They seem really interested in what I can bring with my skill set.”

As for what Phillips himself is interested in?

“A balance of quality education and football,” he said. “I’m looking for coaches that can develop me as a player and that believe that my skills fitting in their system. The school’s environment is important and opportunity after football.

“Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Cal, LSU, Washington and a few others are near the top of my list.”

Most of the schools Phillips has high interest in are out of the state of California, and he’s got no issue leaving the West Coast for college if it’s the best decision for his future.

“Mom will have a little harder time with it,” he joked. “But they definitely want me in the spot that is best for me, even if it’s out of Cali or the Pac-12. All of my top schools are out of state. I think I will grow a lot and I am going to chase my dream where ever the fit is right.”

If Ohio State wants to show him that the school is a good fit for him, he’ll need to make a visit. He hopes to do that soon.

“Maybe late February or March,” he said. “I need to speak with my parents.”

Clark Phillips is High on Ohio State
Four-star California cornerback Clark Phillips III said he is very high on Ohio State and hopes to make his official visits before his next football season, when he will look to commit to a program.

The No. 3 cornerback in the 2020 class received his Ohio State offer on Jan 24 and has since earned offers from Texas, Michigan, Clemson, Georgia and South Carolina. Ohio State will likely be among his official visits throughout the spring and summer.

“I am really serious about understanding my options before just committing,” Phillips said. “I think I have a good feeling for what I’m looking for, and when I see it, I will know it.”

Phillips has developed a good relationship with Ohio State secondary coach Jeff Hafley and has also been in contact with Ryan Day. One of Phillips’ most significant measures for a program he wants to pay for is how it plans ot use him in the secondary, and while not providing specifics, Phillips said Hafley has piqued his interest.

“It’s a combination of coaching, level of ball and possible fit based on what Coach Hafley think about my game,” Phillips said. “It has me interested in learning more.”

As a sophomore and junior at La Habra High School, Phillips intercepted nine passes and made 44 tackles. The high school junior said he takes pride in being both a coverage corner and a tackler on the outside.

With Ohio State being one of the schools considered for Arizona five-star cornerback Kelee Ringo, Phillips adds another option from the West for the Buckeyes,, who didn’t add any cornerbacks in the 2019 class.

Ohio State will have to battle West Coast schools for both prospects, though. Arizona, Arizona State and Oregon are all schools being strongly considered by Phillips in particular.

Ohio State makes first impression on Clark Phillips
Ohio State is going to probably take three cornerbacks in the Class of 2020, and one of the primary targets is La Habra (Calif.) 4-star prospect Clark Phillips III. The country’s fourth-ranked corner was in Columbus on Thursday and part of Friday before heading to Notre Dame for a similarly-styled trip.

“It was great,” Phillips said. “I learned a lot more about both programs. Ohio State definitely matched my expectations.

“The competition and the aggressive nature and the love the players played with at practice really stood out.”

Phillips was particularly impressed by the way Ohio State coaches focus on life after football.

“I loved that experience,” he said. “No other school has done that. My family has a great relationship with the coaching staff, both Coach Hafley and Coach Day. They are very down to earth dudes and coaches.

“They are very sincere at Ohio State.”

Ohio State is in line for an official visit from Phillips, and he’s excited about returning to Columbus, whenever that happens.

“My parents loved it, and I’m very comfortable there with the staff and the players,” he said. “I’ll be back there for an official visit for sure, maybe in the summer. I can’t wait to get back.”

Clark Phillips on First OSU Visit
The nation’s No. 4 cornerback in the 2020 class was in Columbus last week, as he made back-to-back visits to Ohio State and Notre Dame between Friday and Saturday. It was the La Habra High School junior cornerback’s first visit to Ohio State from California, and the Ohio State staff made a great first impression, Phillips said.

“It was great,” he said about the visit. “I learned a lot about what it takes to go to Ohio State and what it takes to play at the University.”

Like most high school defensive backs, Phillips marveled at the way Ohio State consistently puts defensive backs into the NFL, including what could be Jeffrey Okudah, Shaun Wade and Jordan Fuller in the future.

Phillips said he has developed good relationships with Ohio State head coach Ryan Day and secondary coach Jeff Hafley and that even though he had been high on the Buckeyes before making his way to Columbus, he feels more grounded in his original optimism after his visit.

“It just reaffirmed what I already knew about the staff and the players and the coaches,” Phillip said.

That affirmation is a large part of why Phillips expects the Buckeyes to be in his top three schools by the time his recruitment comes to a close, he said.

Phillips earned his Ohio State offer on Jan. 24 and has been adding offers to his list over the course of the last few months, including offers from Michigan, Clemson, Texas, Georgia and USC. He has recorded nine interceptions and 25 pass deflections in the first two years of his high school career.

Phillips also said he plans to return to Ohio State for another visit before committing.

Ohio State target Clark Phillips sets commitment date
The Buckeyes could be days away from a major recruiting win. 4-star cornerback Clark Phillips III has set his commitment date, and it happens to coincide with his planned official visit to Ohio State.

Phillips, the nation’s fourth-ranked cornerback, isn’t expected on campus with the Buckeyes on Friday afternoon.

But the timing of his announcement either means he’s decided to commit elsewhere and cancel his Ohio State visit, or he’s committing to Ryan Day’s program live on a national network before he hops on a plane to head to his official visit.

My money is on the latter, and I expect him to show up for his official visit as the third defensive commitment in the 2020 recruiting class, making his decision early to help jumpstart what is a defining weekend for Ohio State.
