    JACK MILLER (FRESHMAN)
Throughout his recruitment, from Meyer's retirement to the addition of a second quarterback in his class, Miller showcased tremendous loyalty. Here's one way to view it:

    • Days between Miller's Ohio State commitment and Stroud's Ohio State offer: 464 days
    • Days between Stroud's Ohio State offer and today: 220 days
At the time he committed, Miller was a high-end four-star prospect. By the time he enrolled in January, he had dropped outside of the top-300 overall recruits in his class. The fall came largely due to injuries, though, and won't affect him now that he's in college whatsoever.

As of now, he and Stroud are about as even as can be. They only got to spend three practices together working under Day and Corey Dennis before they had to head home, which the coaches didn't particularly love. Whenever they get back onto campus, it'll be incumbent on Miller to take advantage of every opportunity he gets, for they'll factor into Day's thoughts on his future as a potential starting quarterback in Columbus in 2021.

    C.J. STROUD, QB
    JACK MILLER, QB

Because it’s rare to have two quarterbacks as highly touted as Stroud and Miller in the same recruiting class, there’s no clear blueprint for Ohio State to follow in dividing playing time between them this season. The Buckeyes should make an effort to play both of them in up to four games to get them game experience before they compete for the starting job in 2021, but whether either or both of them plays more than that could depend on how the depth chart shakes out and how the season plays out.

If either of them separates himself from the other (and Gunnar Hoak) as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart, he likely won’t redshirt and the other likely will. If Hoak maintains the backup job, they could both redshirt to preserve their four years of eligibility. Or Ohio State could look to play each of them in as many games as possible, dividing up snaps as equally as possible and redshirting neither, if they want to ensure keeping both happy going into next year.

Traditional wisdom would suggest redshirting one of them, especially if one pulls ahead of the other this summer or early in the season, but in an era where backup quarterbacks transferring elsewhere has become commonplace, there might not be as much incentive to redshirt either of them as there would have been in the past.

QB C.J. STROUD (8 SNAPS IN THREE GAMES)
QB JACK MILLER (10 SNAPS IN TWO GAMES)

We’ll talk about these two second-year quarterbacks together, because they’re both entering their second year at Ohio State in a similar position: They’re set to compete for the starting job this spring, and neither of them threw a pass in limited action last season.

Both quarterbacks flashed their running ability – Stroud ran for a 48-yard touchdown on his only carry of the season, while Miller had two carries for 23 yards and a touchdown – but they’re still completely unproven as passers at the collegiate level.

That certainly wasn’t the plan going into 2020, but the shortened season limited the opportunities for Ohio State to take Justin Fields out of games early, which means the Buckeyes will have to rely solely on practice performance to determine whether Stroud, Miller or 2021 five-star Kyle McCord should be their new starter.

Stroud is viewed as the frontrunner, in part because it was him and not Miller who was called upon when Fields briefly left the Michigan State and Clemson games with injury, but the competition between them has only just begun. Unless McCord beats both of them as a true freshman, though, one of them could become Ohio State’s most important player in 2021.

C.J. Stroud didn't pass the ball at all as a true freshman, but he did run for a 48-yard touchdown on his only carry of the season.
