Ohio State offers Walker Culver in wake of official visit

After a relatively quiet trip to Ohio State, things could start to get much louder in the recruitment of 3-star offensive lineman Walker Culver.

Culver, who attends Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tenn., and is a Colorado commit, made an official visit to Columbus last weekend. The visit ended with an official offer from the Buckeyes.

Since committing to Colorado one year ago Tuesday, Culver’s only other public visit has been to Auburn in the spring. Ohio State has two offensive linemen committed in 2018, but would like to add at least two more.

However, as attrition comes in a variety of forms following the season, the need to add linemen could grow beyond two, and someone such as Culver — with his 6-foot-6, 275-pound frame — is a good late option if he’s interested.

I’d suggest keeping an eye on this one moving forward.

    FLIPPING PANCAKES WITH A SPATULA

Though Ohio State already holds a commitment from four-star offensive tackle Max Wray, the Buckeyes are actively looking to add at least two more players at the position in the current recruiting cycle.

Fairfield five-star Jackson Carman is undoubtedly the staff's top target, with names like Maryland four-star Rasheed Walker and Florida four-stars William Barnes and Nicholas Petit-Freere also being mentioned from time to time. Another to pay attention to, however, is Chattanooga three-star Walker Culver, who also took an official visit to Columbus and was offered by Ohio State this weekend.

The 6-foot-6, 273-pound Culver is considered the 86th-best offensive tackle and No. 927 prospect overall in the Class of 2018, but his versatility and ability to play multiple positions along the offensive line makes him an intriguing option for the Buckeyes moving forward.

Culver committed to Colorado one year ago tomorrow, but programs such as Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Mississippi State Missouri, North Carolina and Virginia Tech have tossed their hat in the ring in the meantime, and it's given him a bit to think about. It seems as if the Hokies have gained the most ground thanks to an unofficial visit last month.

All that being said, there's hope in both Blacksburg and Columbus that Culver will hold off on signing his National Letter of Intent until February. That would give Ohio State and Virginia Tech a better chance of flipping him from his pledge if they both miss out on some of their top targets.

Colorado, meanwhile, hopes an official visit in December will prompt him to put pen to paper during the Early Signing Period.

    GET YOUR SPATULAS READY

With two offensive linemen already in the fold in four-star tackle Max Wray and four-star guard Matthew Jones, Ohio State hopes to round out its top-ranked haul with at least two more linemen.

Five-star tackle Jackson Carman is without a doubt the top target, but there are plenty of options beyond him, too. Among them, Colorado three-star tackle commit Walker Culver, who took an official visit to Columbus for Saturday's game against Illinois.

The 6-foot-6, 273-pound Culver is considered the 86th-best offensive tackle and No. 927 prospect overall in the Class of 2018, but his versatility and ability to play multiple positions along the offensive line make him an intriguing option for the staff despite his ranking. Those close to the program have told Eleven Warriors they believe he's underrated and the staff would accept his pledge at any point in time as a result.

With that said, I made a 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction in favor of Ohio State for Culver on Tuesday afternoon.

Culver — who plays his prep ball Chattanooga's Baylor School — is set to take his official visit to Colorado on Dec. 8 and then return to Virginia Tech the following weekend, marking his second time in Blacksburg this fall. The Hokies were presumed to be a serious threat to flip him, but that was before the Buckeyes offered on Sunday.

After those visits, I believe he'll sit down with his family and come to the conclusion that Ohio State is where he wants to be. He'll likely put pen to paper just a few days later during the Early Signing Period.

MORE TIME TO FIGURE IT OUT

Chattanooga, Tennessee, Baylor School three-star offensive tackle Walker Culver — one of Ohio State's few remaining targets along the line — was supposed to visit Virginia Tech this weekend, prompting many to believe a decision between Buckeyes and Hokies would soon follow.

His brother's birthday is this weekend, however, so the official visit got pushed back to next weekend, Dec. 15.

The 6-foot-6, 273-pound Culver, you may recall, had been committed to Colorado for over a year before he reopened his recruitment last month. The decision came on the heels of a trip to Columbus and subsequent offer from Ohio State.

With the Buckeyes planning to take two more offensive lineman this cycle, Culver's versatility has become an intriguing option. Fairfield five-star Jackson Carman and Maryland four-star Rasheed Walker sit above him on the priority chart, however, and sources close to the program have told Eleven Warriors the staff has taken a “wait-and-see approach” when it comes to accepting Culver's commitment.

Meyer and Studrawa were in Tennessee on Monday, at which time they stopped to see Culver and four-star offensive tackle commit Max Wray. Though he's not certain to make a commitment and sign with the school of his choice during the Early Signing Period, that was likely their final pitch to the talented lineman.

If Ohio State ultimately has the room for Culver, I believe he'll end up in Columbus. But the staff might have to decide soon or risk losing him to Virginia Tech, as the Hokies will undoubtedly roll out the maroon carpet next weekend.
