With 13 scholarship offers, including Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State, there may not be a more sought-after lineman in the state of Pennsylvania.

Right now, the Buckeyes are the 247Sports.com crystal ball leader for “Juice” Scruggs, and his recruitment is being led by Greg Studrawa. Penn State has the nation’s top 2018 class right now, and though Erie is just a stone’s throw from the Ohio border and hundreds of miles from Happy Valley, I expect James Franklin and the Nittany Lions to make this one a battle. Scruggs is the No. 9 guard in America.

Juice Scruggs says Buckeyes, Nittany Lions top his list

One of the Buckeyes’ top offensive line targets has been Erie (Pa.) 4-star guard Fredrick “Juice” Scruggs. A 6-foot-3, 270-pounder at Cathedral Prep, Scruggs has been quiet in his recruitment, telling Land of 10 that he wanted to handle the process privately to make sure he “stays humble.” On Sunday at Nike’s The Opening in Cleveland, he talked about where things stand.

“Coach (Urban) Meyer and Coach Stud (offensive line coach Greg Studrawa) hit me up almost every day,” Scruggs said. “Basically, they’re trying to get me to commit early, but I’ve been delaying the process to try and evaluate my options. I’ve got a great relationship with both of them. Ohio State is at the top of my board right now.”

Scruggs visited Ohio State in March for a Saturday scrimmage. He was impressed by the Buckeyes’ intensity.

“It was a great experience,” he said. “It just felt like I wanted to be there. I loved every minute of it. It was a great time with Coach Stud and Coach Meyer, spending time with them. Watching their practice was a great time.”

Scruggs showed up at The Opening wearing an Ohio State windbreaker, but he says he wants to explore a few options before he makes a decision.

“It’s just a nice jacket,” Scruggs said, laughing. “I’ve got no plans to get back to Ohio State right now, but it’s going to be soon. I just want to go down to other schools and see how everything is, to see if it feels like home. I’d like to see North Carolina, Michigan, Michigan State and LSU. I’m hoping that Notre Dame comes calling.”

    Fredrick Scruggs • 2018 OL • Erie, PA (Cathedral Prep) • ★★★★

Erie, Pennsylvania's Fredrick "Juice" Scruggs is a rarity in the recruiting world these days as he's been mostly quiet and private throughout the process. He was in Columbus in March but there was little fanfare as most simply didn't know about the visit. The four-star made it to Cleveland last weekend and did speak a bit about his interest in the Buckeyes, stating that they're at the top of his list with the Nittany Lions.

Ohio State is likely looking at a bigger offensive line class for 2018, and the speculation is the number could reach as many as six new signees. Offensive tackle is one of the priority positions for this class, but Greg Studrawa will need to bring in a center and likely a couple other interior linemen as well.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pounder appears to be someone the staff holds in high regard. He's an interior lineman all the way and is at least tentatively being mentioned as a visitor for the spring game. It's difficult to even guess what may happen for someone who stays under the radar like Scruggs, but if the Ashtabula native does find his way back to Columbus, then things could get interesting.

Ohio State has been battling Penn State for months for Fredrick Scruggs and there’s no sign of slowdown on either side.

The country’s third-ranked center likely would be a guard in Columbus and “Juice” has made no bones about it: He’s very interested in the Buckeyes. Born in Ashtabula, the same Ohio town as Urban Meyer, Scruggs is on the “could commit anytime” plan and the Buckeyes would like that time to be soon and for Ohio State to be the choice.

    CAN THEY SQUEEZE HIM IN?

In an odd series of tweets Sunday night, Erie, Pennsylvania, Cathedral Prep four-star center Fredrick "Juice" Scruggs announced that he would make his college decision later this week — or did he?

He initially tweeted that he would host a commitment pool party on Aug. 4, then followed that up with a correction saying his decision would come on Aug. 5. Scruggs then deleted both tweets before adding there would be no pool party, only an announcement this Friday. That tweet was also deleted, with everyone left to wonder whether an announcement will actually occur.

Well, sources tell Eleven Warriors the 6-foot-3, 270-pound Scruggs — who is considered the second-best center and No. 196 prospect overall in the Class of 2018 — will in fact make his decision on Friday afternoon. As to why he deleted the tweets? I can't tell you, but I know there's plenty of times where I've tweeted something and messed it up numerous times to the point where I just give up on the tweet altogether.

It happens, and I expect Scruggs to make a more formal announcement later in the week.

As for the decision, Scruggs is down to Ohio State and Penn State, and that has been the case seemingly all the way through his recruitment. I honestly expected him to commit to the Buckeyes during the Spring Game, but a visit to Happy Valley for the Nittany Lions' intrasquad scrimmage muddied the water a bit.

Scruggs dealt with some unspecified family/personal issues this summer — and that, plus the fact that both programs were still trying to see how he fit in their plans — put his recruitment on the back burner for a while. It appears, though, that one of the programs gave him the green light on Sunday night to make the call.

Which one? It appears to be Penn State, as Ohio State seems confident in closing out its offensive line haul — that already includes four-stars Max Wray and Matthew Jones — by chasing Jackson Carman and William Barnes through signing day. With Jones' versatility and ability to play the center position, Scruggs was no longer a necessity along the interior portion of the offensive line.

This morning, a flood of Crystal Ball predictions have been place in favor of the Nittany Lions, backing up my thinking when it came to Scruggs' recruitment. And though it seems crazy for the Buckeyes pass on a player that's ranked among the Top 2 players at his position, that's just where the staff is right now in terms of recruiting at an elite level — only the best of the best end up in Columbus.
