Jayson Oweh is down to Ohio State, Penn State and Notre Dame. (Jeremy Birmingham/Land of 10)

Jayson Oweh is still on campus, and he’ll leave on Monday morning, flying out at 6 a.m.

From talking to him briefly (I really don’t like to reach out to recruits on their visit), the trip has gone well. From talking to others, there’s a growing confidence that Oweh’s relationship with the Buckeyes will be enough to surpass Penn State and make the Buckeyes the ones to land the 6-foot-5, 240-pound pound defensive end.

    ON THE BRIGHT SIDE

Blairstown, New Jersey, Blair Academy four-star defensive end Jayson Oweh was among the nine Ohio State commits and targets who took an official visit for Saturday's 31-16 loss to Oklahoma.

“It was great,” Oweh told Eleven Warriors. “The atmosphere was electric and I had a lot of fun.”

It was actually the first-ever college football game for the 6-foot-5, 236-pound Oweh, who only began to see his recruitment take off in January. And though it didn't end in Ohio State's favor, the result of the game has very little impact on how he views the Buckeyes.

“It was actually good to see how everyone reacted to a loss and how they prepared the next day,” Oweh said.

Oweh was last on campus for Friday Night Lights, and — outside of the game itself — said the visit wasn't all that different from those in the past. That includes a one-day camp in June.

“Coach [Larry] Johnson and I have our usual meeting where he recites his plan for me and studying my technique on tapes,” he said.

By this point, Oweh has seen and heard everything he's wanted from Notre Dame, Ohio State and Penn State — other than game in Happy Valley and South Bend. So how will he eventually reach his decision, which will be announced at the Under Armour All-America Game on Jan. 4, 2018?

“A lot has to do with how each team does this year and how each official visit goes,” he said.

So long as the season doesn't take a dramatic and completely unexpected turn for the worst, I'd say the Buckeyes have put themselves in a great position to land his pledge.

Jayson finds n-Oweh to get to Rutgers for Ohio State game

Earlier in the week, 4-star defensive end Jayson Oweh told Land of 10 that he was hoping to make the 53-mile drive to Piscataway, N.J., to visit Rutgers for its game against Ohio State at 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday.

“I might go,” Oweh told Land of 10. “If I can get tickets.”

That is unfortunately not in the cards for the Blairstown, N.J., standout.

“It’s not looking like I’ll be able to go,” Oweh said Friday. “I would’ve loved to. I just won’t get there in time, and I didn’t get to hear back from Rutgers.”

Oweh and his Blair Academy teammates play in Newtown Square, Pa., on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET. It’s a two-hour drive back to Blairstown, so that opportunity has been effectively squashed. However, Oweh said he’s staying in contact with the Buckeyes, so it’s likely they’re aware he won’t be in town.

“I am texting Urban Meyer right now,” he said. “I talked to Larry Johnson [Thursday] night.”

Jayson Oweh adds Michigan offer, will take official visit to Ann Arbor

The already interesting battle for 4-star defensive end Jayson Oweh took another turn on Wednesday night. Michigan threw its hat into the ring for the nation’s No. 7-ranked strongside defensive end.

With the Wolverines getting into the mix, things could get confusing from here. This has been, without question, a two-team race between Ohio State and Penn State, but Oweh said Michigan is a school capable of muddying the picture.

“This is a huge offer for me,” Oweh told Land of 10 in a text message. “They’re both academically and athletically strong. This is definitely a game changer. My parents are excited about the offer as well. We will definitely be utilizing one of our official visits on Michigan.”

Oweh has taken his official visit to Ohio State already, but is still planning on taking visits to Penn State, Florida and now, Michigan. He’s also visited Penn State unofficially this season. The Buckeyes are working hard to try to get him back to campus in an unofficial capacity to try to limit what appears to be a loss of momentum in their recruitment of the 6-foot-5, 236-pound Oweh.

“They have been trying to work something out with me,” Oweh said of an unofficial visit. “But mostly I’m not going to be able to during the season. Maybe after if there’s time.”

Though they’re late to the party with their offer, Michigan is big in New Jersey – linebacker coach Chris Partridge hails from there – and have had excellent success recruiting the state in recent years.

Get your popcorn ready for the next twist in this saga. Jan. 4 – decision day for Oweh – is just around the corner.

    VENTURE CARD

I hope Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer has a travel-rewards credit card because he's already racked up a lot of miles during the Buckeyes' open week.

Just one day after watching five-star cornerback Anthony Cook practice and meeting with his coaches in Houston, Meyer flew to New Jersey (via Maryland) to do the same with four-star defensive end Jayson Oweh on Tuesday afternoon, Blair Academy head coach Jim Saylor told Eleven Warriors.

He was met in Maryland by defensive line coach Larry Johnson, and the two then made the trip to New Jersey together — but more on that in a second.

You may recall the 6-foot-5, 236-pound Oweh isn't set to make his college decision for more than two months at the Under Armour All-America Game in January. But given his recent offers from Florida and Michigan, as well as a visit from Penn State head coach James Franklin last week, it's no surprise the Buckeyes made it a priority to see him this week.

“[The] visit went well. Two great coaches,” Saylor said. “They just wanted to make sure they were doing what they needed to do to land Jayson. And they are. He feels confident in them as people to help him grow on and off the field. No better man than Coach Johnson. They truly want Jayson to be successful on and off the field.”

Oweh is among the three premier defensive end targets yet to decide on his future. But with Cleveland Heights four-star Tyreke Smith seemingly trending toward the Nittany Lions and the staff having backed off a bit in its pursuit of five-star Micah Parsons, Oweh has quickly become a can't-miss prospect despite his overall lack of experience playing the game of football.

Only adding to that, Oweh has missed some time with a high ankle sprain this season. He's played through the pain in a few games, but missed the Buccaneers' win over 41-0 win Mercersburg Academy on Friday.

“[He is] probably out this week with a high ankle sprain,” Saylor said. “[He] has not been on the field much, but [we're] looking forward to him getting back.”

Oweh will be needed, too, as Blair Academy has a tough matchup with The Peddie School in three weeks.

“They are loaded with talent, but our kids look forward to playing them” Saylor said. “I've got a great group of young men playing for each other.”
