    IMPRESSED BY THE TAPE

Another top prospect to come to Columbus without an offer but leave with one in hand was West Des Moines, Iowa, Dowling Catholic four-star defensive end John Waggoner.

“It definitely does [mean a lot],” Waggoner told Eleven Warriors. “I got to sit down with coach [Larry] Johnson and break down my film with him. We met for a while and it sounded like they were going to [offer], but we ended up meeting with coach Meyer after that and he offered.”

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Waggoner is considered the top-rated player in the state and No. 15 weak-side defensive end in the Class of 2018. He holds nine offers from programs such as Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon and UCLA.

Waggoner, who recorded 27 total tackles and eight sacks for the Maroons en route to being named first-team all-state last season, said his parents were equally impressed with campus and the facilities. He doesn't plan to make a decision on his future anytime soon, so expect him to return for another visit this fall.

4-star DE happy to stop at Ohio State, work with Larry Johnson Sr.

Another big-time star made a surprise stop in Columbus on Saturday.

John Waggoner, a springtime visitor to Columbus and March recipient of a Buckeyes offer, was at Penn State on Friday. He decided it was worth a short diversion on his way home to West Des Moines, Iowa, to get back and see the Buckeyes again, so he showed up the next day.

“It went well,” Waggoner told Land of 10 about the camp. “I just made a quick stop on my way from Penn State to get a workout in, but I learned a lot.”

The country’s ninth-ranked weakside defensive end in 2018 per 247Sports spent most of his day working alongside defensive line coach Larry Johnson Sr.

“We met before I left,” Waggoner said of Johnson. “He showed me a lot of different hand-fighting things for me to work on. He said to stay in touch and that he was really excited I came.”

Waggoner said he and Ohio State have been staying in contact the last few months.

“Urban Meyer texts me once or twice a week,” he said. “So does Coach Johnson. I also talk on the phone with Johnson every so often. This trip was big, just to see what it’s like to be coached by Coach Johnson.”

Expect a July decision for Waggoner. Ohio State, Notre Dame, Iowa and Penn State are among his top schools.
