Ohio State offers Kentucky commitment Jarren Williams

Well, folks, it’s happened: After 1 1/2 years of holding tight to quarterback commitment Emory Jones, the Buckeyes offered another quarterback Thursday morning, and – at the very least – conceded that they are not where they want it to be with Jones.

So, that quarterback, Kentucky commit Jarren Williams, is now officially an Ohio State target. Who is he?

    • Jarren Williams
    • Lawrenceville (Ga.) Central Gwinnett High School
    • 6-foot-2
    • 206 pounds
    • 4-star prospect
    • No. 8-ranked dual-threat QB
    • 27 offers
    • Committed to Kentucky
OK, Williams – who was an Elite 11 finalist and a participant at The Opening – is not a “new” name to Ohio State. They’ve been well aware of him for months.

    From SEC Country’s Joe Mussatto:

“What people don’t understand is Ohio State’s not coming in late. Ohio State came down and did a camp at our school. Urban Meyer had an opportunity to talk to Jarren then. So, that relationship was always there. Although they had a commitment in Emory Jones, he always told Jarren he really thinks Jarren is a special talent. When the whole thing happened with Emory Jones, I think that kind of furthered things along.

Kentucky has been the school for Williams, and he’s been proud of that. Back in late spring, just days after receiving an offer from Alabama, Williams de-committed from the Wildcats and decided to “look around.” After a few short weeks, he re-committed to Kentucky. He told me then he thought the attention he was receiving was a net positive for the Wildcats.

“I think its a good thing for the program,” Williams said when asked how UK was handling all the big schools flirting with him. “That Kentucky can recruit on that stage.”

Fast-forward to now and it’s Alabama and Ohio State trying to convince Williams he’s got better opportunities outside of Lexington. Why would Williams listen again, and now? His father’s words to the aforementioned Mussatto give a little insight into that.

“I think he wants to be around players that want to win. Kentucky has certainly demonstrated that they’re winning. They’re 5-2. But I think for him, he’s looking at it from a point of view that he wants better players around him.”

There’s no official visit planned yet for Williams and Ohio State, but it’s safe to say the Buckeyes will try and make that happen soon. Kentucky’s Vince Marrow, always confident, took to Twitter to suggest he’s not worried about anyone flipping the Wildcats’ prized recruit.

He probably should be. Just like Ohio State would be if Kentucky’s basketball team came along and offered someone like their point guard commit, Luther Muhammad. The truth is an offer and a chance to play in Columbus is much bigger than one from Kentucky.

Of course, the Buckeyes do still have Emory Jones committed, and there’s no idea when (or, truly, if) that will change. Jones has put Ohio State in a position that gives them no option but to offer another quarterback.

Jones has been to Alabama four times in the last four months and has not been able to give Ohio State’s coaching staff a guarantee about his status. That’s what happens as the recruiting calendar draws closer to signing day: recruits get leverage, and they’re becoming savvy enough to use it. That doesn’t mean the Buckeyes should, or can afford to, stand pat, though.

That’s what prompted the offer on Thursday. You can’t be caught standing flat-footed, especially at quarterback and especially because not signing a QB in the Class of 2018 means you risk entering spring football with only two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.

You don’t want to assume the worst, but you’d better prepare for it.

UK media/fans seem pretty confident he's going to stick with UK. Thoughts?

Emory Jones didn’t visit Bama this weekend like everyone thought he would. Maybe we hang on to him

    Buckeyes to host Jarren Williams

The Buckeyes are recruiting other quarterbacks (as mentioned above) and none with as much fervor as Lawrenceville (Ga.) 4-star prospect Jarren Williams.

Offered by the Buckeyes about a week ago, Williams has set up an official visit to Columbus and will see Ohio State host Illinois on Nov. 18. That trip will come one week after an official visit to Miami and one week before an official visit to Auburn. Following the trip to the Iron Bowl, Williams will likely get back to Kentucky, the school he has committed to twice.

The Buckeyes are in the race here, and there’s no reason for Williams to be taking these visits unless he is seriously considering making a switch. I wouldn’t suggest that Kentucky is out of the race (he’s committed there, has been twice, has his best relationships there, etc.) but the sharks in the water may smell blood and it could get tougher and tougher for the Wildcats to keep him in the fold.
