Bama confident it’ll land a committed QB … but which one?

We’ll get right to it this week, diving into what’s what with respect to Ohio State and quarterback commit Emory Jones.

As you are probably aware, Jones visited Alabama again last weekend, this time for an official visit. It’s the fourth trip to Tuscaloosa for Jones since the summer, and the visit occurred just one day after Buckeyes quarterbacks coach Ryan Day visited him at Franklin (Ga.) Heard County High School and watched Jones score three times in his team’s 49-15 win over nearby Jordan.

There have been no details emerging about Jones’ visit to Bama, but it can be supposed that he had a great time, really felt at home and all that stuff. The bottom line is that right now, until a return to Columbus happens (and it’s scheduled for this coming weekend), there is going to be some tension about what happens next.

“There’s always a concern when a commit takes a visit,” one source told Land of 10 over the weekend.

That concern is more tangible when you consider it from the Bama point of view. I asked a source close to the Tide where they’re at, confidence wise, and it’s not positive for the Buckeyes.

“They think both Emory Jones and [Kentucky commit] Jarren Williams want to flip,” the source said of Alabama. “They said that last week and I asked if that’s still true. They said yes.”

A year ago, similar rumors swirled around Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade, and in truth Bama is very confident in most cases when it comes to recruiting. I mean, heck, they’ve won the national recruiting “title” the last seven years. Some people have speculated that the Tide have even asked Williams to hold off on flipping while they wait for Jones to make a decision. With early enrollment in his plans, that should come sometime soon.

Ohio State wants Jones to be their future quarterback. Does his “dream school” still hold the keys to his recruitment? I guess we’ll find out this weekend.

    First things first…
Right now, there’s not going to be a lot of concrete news coming out of the key official visits from the weekend. Emory Jones departed Columbus just about an hour ago, and – as he’s done in recent months – he’s keeping everything pretty close to the vest.

In the next few days, you’ll likely hear all kinds of things, but the hope for the Buckeyes is simple: they wanted to lock Jones up this weekend, period. He’s not the emotional, “rah rah” guy on Twitter, but this tweet Friday night gave at least a little insight into his thinking.

I saw Jones before the game, during the game, and after, and he never showed any kind of sign as to how he was feeling, but from talking to other commitments, there remains a cautious optimism that he’ll end up sticking with his year-plus long pledge. That said, the common response was that Jones was quiet and private, which is kind of his normal way of acting.

Ohio State has offered Kentucky commit Jarren Williams.

This can't be a good sign regarding Jones.

This kid would be crazy to decommit after a game like that from Barrett ... In one game, Urban and co. showed how capable they are of developing a QB, while also showing that they are extremely loyal to the players that they trust.

They also showed how willing they are to trust their guy to let the ball fly with the game on the line.

Saban has shown time and time again that he doesn't want to put the ball in the air unless necessary. I really don't understand why a QB would want to go to a place like that, when the goal should be to develop your passing game as much as possible for the next level.

I know we shouldn't get upset over one recruit. However, when Jones committed I told people that Urban will now know what it's like to coach Deshaun Watson. Very similar players. I want this one really bad! Very upsetting if we can't hang on to him.

For Emory Jones, if you happen to read this. JT Barrett could be Kevin Wilson's 3rd and Urban Meyer's 2nd Heisman Trophy Winning QB...How many has Saban produced?

Definitely not a positive. My take is that Ohio State is protecting themselves at this point. Smart business decision IMO.

One game does not have much impact on kids in my experience.

I do not see Deshaun Watson when I look at Jones' film.

Here is my take on this situation....

    1. Jones continues to take visits to Bama.
    2. Jones did not reaffirm his verbal to Ohio State this past weekend.
    3. Ohio State wants a quarterback in the 2018 class.
    4. They have been looking at Jarren Williams for a few weeks. Transcripts are good, he is enrolling early.
    5. At this point Ohio State staff is protecting themselves. Jones has not flipped or indicated he will.
    6. We will know more after this weekend, if he visits Bama for the LSU game, all bets are off.

    In Urban we trust.

Is there hope for Emory Jones and Ohio State?

No one seems to really know what is going on with Buckeyes commit Emory Jones. That’s not news to you, Faithful Reader, because I’ve mentioned that multiple times over the last handful of weeks.

The most recent college visit for the Ohio State verbal was, in fact, to Ohio State. Since that trip, though, no “final move” has happened, despite insistence from Southern sources that Bama is feeling very confident and from Ohio State sources that there are more questions than answers coming their way.

Again, that combination of “things” is what has me, and most others, feeling pessimistic when it comes to the Buckeyes’ chances of holding on to Jones, because usually smoke is coming from a fire … somewhere.

But here’s the deal: Not a single Ohio State source can pinpoint the location of the flame! Isn’t that puzzling?

“[Emory] has never been able to verbalize any issues with Ohio State,” one clued-in source shared with Land of 10. “[The Buckeyes] are just not sure what to think.”

Yet as I’ve said a few times now, it just feels like he’s trending in Bama’s direction. That’s what those close to the Tide think. Here’s another source, from Saturday night, sharing that sentiment: “[The Bama staff] feels really good about Emory. That’s not breaking news, but when it was told to me, second hand, it was almost like it was a sure thing.”

So, take that information and add it to this bit of talk from another source.

“What’s funny,” Source No. 3 said, “is that [Jones’ people] are so confused why [Ohio State] is offering and recruiting other quarterbacks.”

Here’s what I think, as of today: Emory Jones’ mother, Trina, likely would prefer her son end up at Ohio State. I think, for whatever reason, that Jones feels most comfortable with the Buckeyes. Yet, for some reason, it almost seems inevitable that he’s going to eventually de-commit and end up signing elsewhere.

Now (and this will be the last I speak of Jones until a decision is made one way or another) here’s a kicker. Remember Source No. 1? He told Land of 10 something interesting Tuesday, something that, if it happened, could change the perception about the whole darn thing.

“[Emory] said that he’s trying to come back to [Ohio State] this weekend,” Source No. 1 shared.

Jones and his Heard County football team square off against South Atlanta on Friday night in the first round of the Georgia AA playoffs. For him to get back to Ohio State the next day, by the time the Buckeyes kick off at noon against Michigan State, would be a near miracle. But if he did? You’d certainly take that as a positive sign that he’s not entirely made up his mind about a flip.

Get over it. Jones, (Not Cardale) is not committing to TOSU. They need to work with what they have, and move forward.

I'm tired of this soap opera. Jones has until the end of the day to PM me and close his recruitment and fully commit to the good guys or I'm moving on to Jarren Williams.
